Samuel L. Jackson suggests that he has discovered new things about Nick Fury while making Marvel’s Jackson’s master spy and former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director has been an instrumental force in many of the storylines which comprise the MCU, and has starred in 11 films to date. The man responsible for forming the Avengers, audiences were finally given a glimpse of Nick Fury's backstory, and his inspiration behind the Avengers Initiative, during the events of 2019’s Captain Marvel. This film would also introduce him to the alien race known as the Skrulls, who play an integral role in the series.
Loosely based on the Secret Invasion comic book arc, the six-episode mini-series will also see more familiar MCU faces return in the form of Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Ben Mendelsohn (Talos), Martin Freeman (Everett Ross) and Don Cheadle (James Rhodes/War Machine). Also making her MCU debut is Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke in an as-yet-unknown role. Marvel boss Kevin Feige has previously teased that the series will not match the large scale of the original comic arc, and instead would serve as a showcase for Jackson and Mendelsohn’s respective characters.
While much of the Secret Invasion series remains firmly under wraps, Jackson recently spoke with EW about his return to the role of Fury and his latest Marvel project. Suggesting that he was able to discover new aspects of his character, Jackson said he relished the “opportunity to explore something other than the badassery” of Nick Fury. Check out his full comments below:
"There are things that even I really didn't know about Nick Fury that I just found out. The minds behind what happened during the Blip are fantastic. That's part of what we're uncovering when we do this series now ... [It's] giving me an opportunity to explore something other than the badassery of who Nick Fury is. I've had a good time doing that, and I'm looking forward to people sharing that aspect of who he is when this series does happen."
Exactly what it is that Jackson managed to find out about Nick Fury remains anyone’s guess. As a master of his craft, Nick Fury has turned deception into an art form and his character undoubtedly has countless secrets up his sleeve. While Captain Marvel certainly went some way toward lifting the veil on his enigmatic self, there are undoubtedly great parts of his character still wrapped in mystery. Foremost amongst these secrets is what Fury was seen doing in space during the post-credit sequence for Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Jackson’s comments also seem to suggest that Secret Invasion may explore the events that occurred during “The Blip”, the five-year gap when half of all life was snapped out of existence by Thanos. However, given that Fury was himself a victim of Thanos' snap, it seems unlikely that the entire series will be set during this time period. For now, exactly when Secret Invasion will take place remains as big a mystery as the former S.H.I.E.L.D. director himself. Hopefully, it will not be too much longer until Disney+ announces an official series premiere date, giving viewers a brand new look at the iconic Nick Fury.
