As Marvel Comics' forgotten superhero Robert Reynolds aka the Sentry potentially prepares for his induction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe's next phase of films, a truly dedicated cosplayer has beaten the MCU to the punch by ushering Sentry and his more favorable sensibilities to life.In time for this year's WonderCon event, cosplayer and deputy editor of The AVC Club, Gil Macias (@gilmaciashq) embraces his inner superhero with the Sentry. Macias' Sentry is presented in his familiar golden and blue superhero uniform with a flowing blue cape and light-up belt to match. Gil even exhibits yellow s in his eyes to give the impression that Sentry is putting his famous power of "1 million exploding suns" to good use.
Given the dedication to comic book accuracy, the costume doesn't offer much in the way of liberties to be taken, yet realizes everything that made the comic suit an instant hit with readers. With the help of talented designer Ricky Broussard, Macias' Sentry leaps off the comic page.
The Sentry Makes His Way to WonderCon
Though his exploits and adventures are of legend, Sentry is a relatively new addition to Marvel Comics compared to other established heroes. Robert Reynolds was an average human struggling with addiction and DID (dissociative identity disorder) who happened to stumble upon Canada's confidential Department K sector and the latest attempt to replicate the super soldier formula, Project: Sentry. Stealing the untested Golden Sentry formula, Robert acquires extraordinary strength and abilities ranging from super speed and stamina to more abstract powers like molecular manipulation. In contrast to Sentry's heroic qualities is Robert's inner evil known as the Void, which can often manifest itself into a corporal being of fear and destruction.
There's no mistake that Gil is a massive fan of the Sentry character, as the cosplayer can even be spotted with a Marvel Legends figure of the character during the WonderCon convention. When Macias isn't busy pulling double duty as Sentry, Gil can be found adopting the identity of other iconic comic book characters. Alongside Sentry, Macias is no stranger to utilizing other Marvel superheroes like Captain Marvel, Wonder Man, and Iron Fist for cosplay.
The Sentry became a prominent figure within the modern Marvel pantheon once more under fan-favorite writer Brian Michael Bendis, who placed Sentry as part of his original New Avengers team alongside Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Spider-Woman, and Wolverine. As Sentry became even more of a recurring force, the hero would find himself working under former Spider-Man nemesis Norman Osborn's own iteration of the Dark Avengers.
When used to his full potential, Sentry presents the heroes of the Marvel Universe with a near unstoppable threat that requires several beings to take him down. Sentry may not have much of a presence in Marvel's latest line of comic titles but there still exists a tremendous degree of potential that cosplayers like Gil continue to bring to light.
