Russell first made a name for himself directing dark indie comedies like Flirting With Disaster, but he scored a hit with Three Kings in 1999. His career would later be overshadowed by controversies over conflicts on the sets of Three Kings with star George Clooney and follow-up I Heart Huckabees with Lily Tomlin. He also endured a difficult production on comedy Nailed, a black comedy starring Jessica Biel as a woman who suffers a head injury that turns her into a nymphomaniac.
Nailed was shut down four times due to constant budget issues, with the director eventually leaving before filming could be complete. A version of the movie was eventually released with the title Accidental Love in 2015, with Russell - having long disowned it - credited under the pseudonym Stephen Greene. David O'Russell received a comeback thanks to the success of Bradley Cooper as a man with bipolar disorder who falls for Jennifer Lawrence's widow.

Silver Linings Playbook's score was composed by the legendary Danny Elfman, with two tracks from his score - "Silver Lining Titles" and "Walking Home" - making it on to the soundtrack. It's a soundtrack with a little something for everybody, from Jessie J's poppy main theme "Silver Lining (Crazy 'Bout You)" to soul classic "My Cherie Amour" by Stevie Wonder, "Now I´m a Fool" by Eagles Of Death Metal and the jazzy "Maria" by The Dave Brubeck Quartet.
The success of Silver Linings Playbook led to another Bradley Cooper / Jennifer Lawrence collaboration shortly after, though 2014's Joy.
