A Son of Kong movie would have intriguing implications for both Kong and the MonsterVerse as a whole. Though it would be an unexpected direction for the franchise, it’s not a new idea. Less than a year after the original King Kong hit theaters in 1933, RKO Pictures released a sequel, Son of Kong. As the title implied, the movie followed the offspring of the giant ape that scaled the Empire State Building.
Just a few weeks after Godzilla vs. Kong became the biggest box office hit of the pandemic and a success on HBO Max, it was reported that Legendary is looking at extending the MonsterVerse with more movies. One particular project that’s supposedly being considered is Son of Kong. According to reports, Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard is in early talks to helm the film. If it’s true that a Son of Kong movie is happening, this would say a great deal about what comes next for Kong and how the MonsterVerse will build off the fourth installment.
As things currently stand, a Son of Kong movie would need a major change to come for the MonsterVerse for it work. Hollow Earth storyline but didn’t take it. The movie sent him underground into the world his ancestors came from, but he didn’t come across any more like him. However, a Son of Kong movie would mean Kong did find at least one other member of his species somewhere in the Hollow Earth after Godzilla vs. Kong ended.
It makes sense the MonsterVerse’s Son of Kong would be set at least partially in the Hollow Earth, which would provide Wingard with a chance to further explore this vast and mysterious world, Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Also, Legendary making a legacy movie like Son of Kong would hint the MonsterVerse is ending Kong’s story and beginning a new one. This would be an odd time for that to happen, especially since Kong just found a new home. When taking that consideration, Son of Kong – as opposed to Kong 2 – would be disappointing to those who were hoping his discovery of the Hollow Earth would open up a new chapter for the MonsterVerse Titan.
