Star Trek comics, and their newest offering, Sons of Star Trek, continues this trend. Spinning out of events occurring in both the flagship Star Trek title and its sister series Defiant, Sons of Star Trek continues the high-quality storytelling that has been a hallmark of IDW’s new, award-winning line of Trek comics.

Sons of Star Trek #1 is written by Morgan Hampton and drawn by Angel Hernandez. Picking up plot points from Day of Blood, Jake Sisko is feeling uncertain of his place in the galaxy and confides this in his friend Nog. Jake decides he wants to write a profile of Worf’s son, Alexander, who followed Kahless during Day of Blood. Shortly thereafter, Q’s son, Q Jr, arrives, telling Jake he is going to help him deal with his issues.

However, Q Jr takes a rather heavy-handed approach, sending Jake, Nog, Alexander and himself into a strange new world.

In late 2022, IDW revitalized their Star Trek comics line, releasing the landmark Star Trek #400, which seeded the god war that culminated in Day of Blood. The rebirth of the line can be traced to Senior Editor Heather Antos, who challenged writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly to create an “adjective-less” Star Trek book. The result was a cross-generational celebration of the franchise that also broke new ground for Star Trek comics. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed, as both Star Trek #400 and the flagship Star Trek series netted Eisner nominations.

Now, Sons of Star Trek, the third entry into IDW’s rejuvenated line, is a winning combination of interpersonal drama and Easter eggs for devoted fans. The universe Q Jr sends Jake and company to have more than a few surprises up its sleeve, namely the crew of the USS Avery, the ship Jake finds himself on. These intriguing deep cuts may seem to be nothing but fan service, yet they are balanced with some great character moments, particularly for Jake Sisko. Jake rarely receives much of the spotlight on Deep Space Nine, and this issue redeems this oversight.

While Jake’s personal dilemmas are front and center in Sons of Star Trek #1, Hampton and Hernandez also seed the beginnings of intriguing arcs for Nog, Alexander and Q Jr, as well as the Avery’s crew. Both Star Trek and Defiant have taken readers on a joyride through the history of the franchise, giving readers a sense of how vast the Star Trek sandbox is. Sons of Star Trek is another winner from IDW, who have published some of the best Trek-related comics in recent memory.
