SPOILERS ahead for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

ending of Spider-Verse and the potential for other characters to in or lead their own spinoffs is limitless.

Even before the movie hit theaters, Sony announced a Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, which will be directed by Joaquim Dos Santos from a script by David Callaham, and the all-female spinoff being directed by Lauren Montgomery from a script by Bek Smith. Now, we break down how exactly Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sets the stage for these two movies.

In of Spider-Verse 2, with the Spider-Verse post-credits scene introduces Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), who is sure to be a key part of the sequel. As such, it's clear Spider-Verse 2 will continue a number of threads already established in the first movie, exploring them naturally while further developing Miles as a character and a superhero.

Spider-Woman Silk Gwen Stacy Spider-Woman

As for the all-female Spider-Verse spinoff, the first movie introduced both Gwen Stacy and Peni Parker, though the former was much more developed. In fact, Gwen's arc in Spider-Verse sees her learn the importance of having friends despite the dangers of being a superhero, which can be further developed in a film that necessitates her teaming up with a number of Spider-Women. In addition to Gwen, Silk and Spider-Woman are also confirmed to appear in this spinoff; it's yet to be confirmed if Peni will appear as well, but she seems a logical inclusion after her introduction in Spider-Verse.

As such, the spinoff will give Sony the chance to develop not just Gwen Stacy but other female iterations of Spidey for the big screen. Considering the call from fans for more diverse representation on screen, especially in of superhero movies, Sony has a good opportunity to give those viewers exactly what they want with a Spider-Verse spinoff focused on the female characters of the multiverse. It's unclear what the story will consist of, but with characters like Gwen Stacy, Silk, Spider-Woman and (possibly) Peni Parker, there's plenty of potential for a fun Spider-Verse spinoff.

Since Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has only just hit theaters, it'll likely be some time before we learn anything new about the sequel and spinoff. Though there are tidbits we can glean from the movie itself, fans may have to wait until Sony officially reveals more information about Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 and the all-female Spider-Verse spinoff movie.
