If Squid Game gets a season 2 at Netflix, it needs to address one of the biggest lingering plot holes from season 1. The dystopic Korean drama has taken the world by storm, becoming Netflix’s biggest original series ever and showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. While Squid Game is spectacular in many ways, its twisty plot leaves a lot of things unexplained, allowing for some notable plot holes for a potential Squid Game season 2 to address.

The whole plot of Squid Game revolves around the secret organization that runs the titular games. From the mysterious identity of the Front Man to the Squid Game henchmen and VIPs, it’s clearly a massive operation, which has apparently been running for decades. Curiously, however, the organization doesn’t seem to have ever faced any real risk of being discovered and dismantled. That seems a bit strange given how many players are released alive every year, any one of whom could do their best to expose the truth about Squid Game to the public. Despite that apparent risk, the organization seems to have maintained full secrecy throughout the years of its existence.

Of course, there are multiple different ways to begin to explain that anonymity. The players in Squid Game are carefully chosen, and they’re all so desperate and deeply in debt that it’s likely most authorities wouldn’t spend much time listening to them in the first place. The Squid Game organization is also clearly very rich and powerful, which means they might be able to simply make any undesired investigations go away. Even still, though, it seems like a stretch that the games have remained so completely hidden for so long. While the police might not want to believe a bunch of deeply indebted miscreants, there are almost certainly of the media who would be happy to give the former players a platform. And with so many people going missing every year, under very similar circumstances, there’s a lot for would-be investigators to grab onto.

During the Squid Game season 2, those investigations need to be addressed. It’s not impossible to explain how the games have remained a secret despite all the loose ends, but season 1 doesn’t even really address those security issues at all. If Squid Game season 2 shows more of the inner workings of the organizations, it could explain how the Front Man and the others have been able to keep the whole thing quiet for so long. Similarly, if Squid Game season 2 follows Gi-hun on a quest to dismantle the organization, it could show exactly how past attempts have failed.

ittedly, Squid Game’s story is more thematic than narrative. It doesn’t hurt the show that such large aspects of the plot are left unexplained because the meaning of Squid Game is more about the broader ideas – human desperation, the inherent ills of capitalism, and how modern society neglects those who need help. If Squid Game season 2 ends up happening, however, bigger questions like how the organization actually works will become more important. The plot holes aren’t huge hindrances now, but they could become problematic if Squid Game season 2 doesn’t start to explain them.
