Star Trek: Discovery's David Ajala looks back on his 3 seasons playing Cleveland Booker opposite Sonequa Martin-Green's Captain Michael Burnham, calling their relationship "lightning in a bottle." Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is the final season, which reunites Book and Burnham on an intergalactic quest for the ancient treasure of the Progenitors. Meanwhile, Michael and Booker look to redefine and reconcile their broken romance as they work together to save the galaxy.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, David Ajala was asked what his lasting impression is of playing Cleveland Booker opposite Sonequa Martin-Green's Michael Burnham for 3 seasons of Star Trek: Discovery. Ajala related what Martin-Green told him when he was cast as Cleveland Booker. Check out David's quote below:
When Sonequa reached out to me, [and] I knew that I was ing the show or I had been cast, she said, ‘Welcome to this wonderful world where everyone s each other, where we're so excited to be on set, where we literally believe that we have lightning in a bottle.’ I believe that their relationship is lightning in a bottle, but it's lightning that feels, dare I say it, safe. It's exciting, and it feels safe. I think these two will always be in each other's lives. I think they bring out the best in each other. And behind every great woman is herself.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide
As Burnham seeks the universe's greatest treasure in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, she'll need help from a host of new and returning characters.
Are Burnham & Book Endgame In Star Trek: Discovery Season 5?
Michael and Booker are meant to be - or are they?
Captain Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker are the central romance among the many love stories in Star Trek: Discovery. In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Michael and Book are back working together when his expertise as a courier becomes imperative to catching the villains Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis). However, Book can't help but see what he and Michael once had and lost when he sees Moll and L'ak, who are recklessly in love and devoted to each other.
Cleveland Booker took the name of his late mentor, Cleveland Booker IV, who is Moll's father.
Book and Burnham broke off their relationship in Star Trek: Discovery season 4. When Booker's home world of Kwejian was destroyed by the Dark Matter Anomaly, Cleveland was hellbent on revenge. Book turned his back on Michael and the United Federation of Planets. Booker ed mad scientist Dr. Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle) to pursue the destruction of the DMA and its creators, Species 10-C. Book ultimately came to his senses and helped the USS Discovery save Species 10-C. Cleveland then accepted his punishment, which was imprisonment and helping Federation worlds recover from the DMA.
Michael and Book becoming a couple again may not have been in Star Trek: Discovery season 5's original game plan.
The question is whether Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will see Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker reignite their romance. Discovery season 5 wasn't produced as the final season, and the cast and crew found out Paramount+ canceled the show after production wrapped. Michael and Book becoming a couple again may not have been in Star Trek: Discovery season 5's original game plan. Fingers are crossed that Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker getting back together is part of Star Trek: Discovery's series finale coda to prove that Burnham and Book are endgame, after all.
