Hera Syndulla and Kanan Jarrus are the heart and soul of Star Wars: Rebels. When the series begins, Hera and Kanan are already a couple. However, a backstory about how the two met is never told during the course of the series. The novel A New Dawn by John Jackson Miller gives answers about Kanan and Hera’s first encounter.

A New Dawn would make for a perfect comic adaptation, giving fans more context about Hera and Kanan’s relationship. By the end of the series, Kanan sacrifices himself to save his found family and his love, Hera.

Star Wars Rebels

The last scenes of the series show that Hera gave birth to their son, Jacen Syndulla, after Kanan’s death. Adapting A New Dawn into comic format would be a bittersweet story of the past and enrich the already beloved characters.

Hera and Kanan Are an Iconic and Fearless Star Wars Couple

As Leaders of the Rebellion, Hera and Kanan Lead Their Crew Against the Empire

Born Caleb Dume, Kanan is a former Jedi padawan who never completed his training before the fall of the Republic and spends years hiding his powers out of a sense of shame. Hera is the twi’lek pilot of her beloved ship, the Ghost, and goes on to become a General and eventually a Commander in the rebellion. Hera and Kanan’s love runs deep, with the two acting as parental figures to the rest of the of Ghost crew--Chopper, Sabine Wren, Ezra Bridger, and Zeb Orrelios.

Hera and Kanan act as a united front and fearless leaders, earning respect from other rebels throughout the Outer Rim.

Hera, Kanan, and their crew act as rebel agents in the Outer Rim of the galaxy, focusing particularly on Ezra’s home planet of Lothal. The crew faces many dangers but never backs down in the face of their enemies, such as Inquisitors, the Imperial Security Bureau, and even Darth Vader himself. Eventually, the Ghost crew go head-to-head with their most intelligent and difficult foe, Grand iral Thrawn. All the time, Hera and Kanan act as a united front and fearless leaders, earning respect from other rebels throughout the Outer Rim.

A New Dawn Tells the Story of How Hera and Kanan Met and Started Their Adventures Together

The Canon Novel Is an Important Part of Star Wars Lore and Needs a Comic Continuation

Hera and Kanan contemplate their relationship in Star Wars Rebels Season 4

A New Dawn, published in 2014, focuses on an aimless Kanan. After losing everything when he was just a child as the Republic fell, Kanan wandered listlessly for a long while, eventually coming to work as a freight pilot assisting in a mission to mine the planet Cynda. Unbeknownst to Kanan, Hera infiltrated the same system as Cynda, investigating the company and leader behind the mining project. By the time Hera and Kanan cross paths, the two of them have already uncovered that the Empire’s plans for Cynda are for evil.

The novel is a classic adventure that one would expect from the two who would go on to become fearless rebel leaders. Throughout the course of A New Dawn, Hera’s tenacity and desire to do good remind him of the Jedi he was once training to become. Instead of continuing to live as a man without purpose, Kanan embraces the Force and his abilities, learning that he no longer wants to be a creature of solitude. Hera quickly captures his heart, as he captures hers, and the novel ends with Kanan ing Hera on the Ghost to continue their adventure and blossoming love story - one that could continue in the Star Wars comics.

A New Dawn is considered a canon novel in the Star Wars universe. A comic adaptation of the novel that delves into the manner in which Kanan and Hera met would make their dynamic in Star Wars: Rebels all the richer. With Hera now in the live action Star Wars universe in the Disney+ series Ahsoka, providing her backstory in comic format for those who did not watch the animated series would give more depth and tragedy to Hera’s character from Star Wars: Rebels.
