Thanks to a rumor about Jimmy Smits reprising his role as Bail Organa in the Disney+ series, The Book of Boba Fett, was almost exclusively set on Tatooine, fans are certainly hopeful that they’ll get to see world-building within the Star Wars galaxy that goes beyond the familiar Outer Rim planet, and exploring Alderaan represents a great opportunity.
Disney+ has been pretty closed-lipped about Obi-Wan Kenobi and so not a lot has been revealed regarding what the new show will include. That said, with Hayden Christensen coming back to the franchise as well, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.
By including Bail Organa, the Senator from Alderaan, Obi-Wan Kenobi would have an opportunity to really delve into the rich culture of the planet, a place Princess Leia had described as “peaceful” before Tarkin ordered Alderaan’s destruction in Star Wars’ first movie, A New Hope. Though books like Leia, Princess of Alderaan have shared a wealth of information about the blue-green planet and its people and values, exploring it further is necessary. By visiting Alderaan in Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars can complete its improvement of the planet and give more gravity to the fact that it and its people were destroyed in A New Hope.
Beyond the prequel trilogy, the Alderaanian Senator, Bail Organa, has been featured in Obi-Wan Kenobi takes place ten years after Revenge of the Sith, so Alderaan is still very much around. The planet values education, volunteering, and mentorship, and Organa notes in Leia, Princess of Alderaan, “Soldiers are a thing of the past,” and all of these points track very well with Leia’s pleas with Tarkin when she tells him that they are peaceful. These deeper examples are important, and by delving into them, it would help viewers to better sympathize with Leia and the loss of her planet in A New Hope. Beyond the snow-capped mountains seen in the background when Bail brings baby Leia home to his wife, Breha, in Revenge of the Sith, very little has been seen of Alderaan’s physical appearance. The planet is really quite beautiful and would be a much-needed break from sandy Tatooine.
Bail Organa, Obi-Wan Kenobi’s rumored prequel character, is not confirmed as being a part of the show yet, but the idea that he could be opens up some interesting opportunities for McGregor’s Obi-Wan. Alderaan is a significant planet in the Star Wars canon, and while that has been acknowledged in the books and comics especially, the planet deserves a platform such as Obi-Wan Kenobi in order to really shine. If Organa really is in the show, now is the time to bring Alderaan into the spotlight before it succumbs to the Death Star.
