WARNING: Major SPOILERS ahead for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

The writer from The Rise of Skywalker have been incredibly negative, partly because of Palpatine.

Back in April, Disney released the first trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which confirmed that Ian McDiarmid would return as Palpatine. Longtime fans will recall that The Emperor had died in Return of the Jedi after Darth Vader saved Luke. McDiarmid then returned for George Lucas' prequel trilogy, which showed the rise of Anakin Skywalker and the influence Palpatine had on turning him to the dark side. Fans were shocked to find out that Palpatine had returned from the dead, and now The Rise of Skywalker's writer has explained why it had to happen.

During a Q&A partly recorded by Twitter kaila ren, writer Chris Terrio explained why they chose to bring Palpatine back for the end of the Skywalker saga. The writer explained that since Palpatine was such an important part in the Skywalker storyline, he needed to be present for the final film. He also explained that he and director J.J. Abrams wanted to utilize the line from the prequels when Palpatine tells Anakin, "The dark side of the force is a pathway to many abilities, some consider to be unnatural." Terrio's full explanation can be seen in the second video below.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker may be the newest Star Wars film to get brutal reviews, but it certainly isn't the first. The prequel trilogy was of course panned by critics, but things have only gotten worse since Disney bought Lucasfilm. Many complained that Solo: A Star Wars Story also received mixed reviews, causing Disney to put future solo films on hold. Even Lucas himself has voiced his frustrations about the way Disney has handled Star Wars.

While fans were excited to see Palpatine's return on the big screen, many weren't satisfied with the reasoning behind it. The quote stated above from Star Wars: Episode III- Revenge of the Sith was a good starting point for teasing Palpatine's return, but the line is the only type of explanation as to how Palpatine returned from the dead. Many people have complained that the sequel trilogy didn't present a cohesive story between the three films, and Palpatine's resurrection in The Rise of Skywalker seemed to be more of a course-correction than anything else.
