Summary

  • The fate of The Mandalorian season 4 remains uncertain after the announcement of The Mandalorian & Grogu movie.
  • Boba Fett actor Temuera Morrison has confirmed changes in season 4 plans due to the movie, as the TV show awaits further developments.
  • The Mandalorian can potentially balance the movie with season 4 to continue its episodic adventures in the Star Wars universe.

Following the announcement of The Mandalorian & Grogu movie, the fate of The Mandalorian season 4 was left up in the air, and Boba Fett actor Temuera Morrison has now confirmed that there were different season 4 plans in place prior to this movie's announcement. The existence of The Mandalorian season 4, or at least the scripts for its story, was never a secret, given that showrunner Jon Favreau had mentioned The Mandalorian season 4 was already in development a year before season 3 premiered. The movie, however, made it unclear exactly what would happen to these scripts - and their story.

While speaking to Screen Rant during the "From Clone Troopers To Bounty Hunters With Temuera Morrison" at Fan Expo Chicago, hosted by Joe Deckelmeier, Morrison brought up The Mandalorian season 4. While he neither confirmed nor denied the possibility of season 4 still happening, he did say that "things have changed a little" because of the movie. Morrison said that not only was season 4 originally the main plan, according to his knowledge, but also that "I was going to turn up in [season 4]." As of now, however, Morrison is "still waiting for a phone call."

I understand they're gonna do a Mando with Grogu movie next, and uh... things have changed a little too. There was going to be a Mando [season] 4, I think, and I was going to turn up in that, but as of now, I'm still waiting for a phone call, to be quite honest.

The Mandalorian Really Needs To Make Season 4 Happen Still

The Movie Cannot Put an End to the Show

Morrison's words about The Mandalorian season 4, particularly his return as Boba Fett, only further prove that The Mandalorian season 4 still has to happen, despite The Mandalorian & Grogu movie. The Mandalorian season 3's ending put the Star Wars TV show back on track to follow the episodic adventures seen in seasons 1 and 2, which were notably more absent in season 3. This would have opened the door for more characters to make brief returns, such as Morrison's Boba Fett. The movie, however, has evidently affected this setup to a degree.

Still, The Mandalorian can strike the necessary balance required to make both projects work in tandem. It wouldn't be the first time a TV series has had a movie premiere in the middle of its run; though it would be a first for Star Wars, there are quite a few instances of it happening, particularly in TV shows made for children. Given Grogu's popularity with the younger audience, it wouldn't be surprising for Star Wars to borrow this technique. Should The Mandalorian & Grogu focus on one particular adventure that sets up season 4, the two could work nicely together.

"At this stage, only Din Djarin, Grogu, and Zeb Orrelios have been confirmed [for the movie], but it's reasonable to assume other major cast from the Disney+ TV show will appear as well." - Thomas Bacon, Everything We Know About The Mandalorian & Grogu

That being said, hopefully The Mandalorian & Grogu doesn't limit itself too much - but if a potential season 4 is still on the cards, it will certainly have to be contained. The Mandalorian isn't a stranger to starting a new season off with information viewers of the show may not already know, thanks to The Book of Boba Fett reuniting Din Djarin and Grogu ahead of season 3, but this wasn't a very well-received decision. It would be different, however, if it took place in The Mandalorian's own movie, which would hopefully still allow season 4 to happen later on.
