HBO's critically acclaimed series Succession, following a dysfunctional family who owns a global media and entertainment conglomerate. Succession ended its four-season run in 2023 as one of the most celebrated dramas of the decade, amassing an impressive 75 Emmy nominations and 19 wins, including three awards for Outstanding Drama Series.

Now, two years after Succession ended, Armstrong's next project has been revealed. Per Deadline, Armstrong is currently penning an untitled movie for HBO Films based on an original idea about four friends who reunite amidst the chaos of an ongoing global financial crisis. It's unclear if the film is about the actual 2008 financial crisis, or is set during a fictional one. Armstrong is still working on the script, but the project is being fast-tracked, with casting schedules being reviewed for production to potentially begin later this year.

Armstrong is serving as an executive producer alongside Frank Rich, both under overall contracts with HBO and previously co-executive produced Succession.

What Jesse Armstrong's Next Project Means For The Succession Creator

It Sounds Like Another Political Satire

Though Jesse Armstrong's style of political satire has become widely associated with Succession, he also has a lot of prior experience writing feature films. Armstrong earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2009 for In The Loop, which he co-wrote with his frequent collaborator Armando Iannucci. The film, a spin-off of Armstrong and Iannucci's TV series The Thick of It, satirizes British-American politics, particularly the invasion of Iraq.

Jesse Armstrong also co-created the British comedies Peep Show and Fresh Meat.

Armstrong also co-wrote the 2010 film Four Lions, a political satire about dimwitted terrorists planning an attack, and the 2020 comedy Downhill, starring Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a married couple who have a near-death experience during a family ski trip. With his film following four friends during a financial crisis, Armstrong should continue to showcase his style of political satire, potentially skewering the powerful class that caused the crisis and exploring the lives of four friends deeply affected by it.

Our Take On Jesse Armstrong's Next Project

It's Incredibly Exciting For Succession Fans

After Succession ended its run as one of the most celebrated dramas of the decade, the announcement of Jesse Armstrong's next project is incredibly exciting. Known for his scathing and sharp political satire, Armstrong's next project sounds like it will certainly play to his strengths. By following four friends during a financial crisis, Armstrong's new film could be similar to Adam McKay's The Big Short, which chronicled how the 2008 financial crisis was caused by the United States housing bubble.
