Kaminski, like superstar artist Dan Mora, is a known fan of Dragon Ball, and it is now clear that his love for the globally beloved anime series will be influencing his work on Superman Unlimited. He shared that he envisions Jon’s training resembling Gohan’s, with the character undergoing a major transformation. The topic of Superman Unlimited and Dragon Ball Z came up when Kaminski discussed his goals for Jon Kent in the series, stating that he really hopes to build out the young hero further. He also shared his mental process behind making the creative connection between Jon and Gohan’s journeys.
Kaminski stated, “...sometimes I have these like, they are less of story markers for people but more importantly like images to follow through on and one of the images I have on my head is Jon training on a mountain like Gohan to overcome Kryptonite and doing so somehow.” This offers a fascinating look into Kaminski’s creative process and clearly shows where his Dragon Ball inspiration for Jon is coming from and how he plans to incorporate it. With Slott writing and Albuquerque handling the art, it will be interesting to see how the two creatives bring this vision to life and whether readers will also feel and recognize the connection to DBZ.

Jon working to overcome his Kryptonite weakness will be a major boon for the character and could even position him as the strongest Kryptonian in the DC Universe if he succeeds. This would mean accomplishing something not even his father has managed. It also makes perfect sense that Jon is attempting this feat in the Superman Unlimited storyline, since the central premise involves a massive Kryptonite asteroid bombarding Earth and flooding the streets and criminal networks with Man of Steel and his family’s greatest weakness. Hence, Superman Jon Kent’s mission to overcome Kryptonite is more important than ever.
