There is a little-known Dean Winchester detail which makes the first death in key moments that define Supernatural, as it forms part of Sam and Dean’s destiny to be Michael and Lucifer’s vessels.

With a growing multiverse of Supernatural alternate realities, spinoff shows, and books, there is plenty of information available about the Winchester family. Written by Supernatural’s executive producer Peter Johnson, the comic book prequel series Supernatural: Origins offers a rare insight into John Winchester’s life after Mary’s death. Although its canon status has been somewhat debated in the past, Supernatural: Origins has six issues and includes various characters, such as Missouri Moseley, Ellen Harvelle, and a young Sam and Dean. However, most notably, Supernatural: Origins #1 includes a detail about Dean Winchester which makes Mary Winchester’s death even more tragic.

Mary's Supernatural Death Was Even More Tragic Than Supernatural Revealed

Dean Stopped Talking After Mary's Death

Although Mary’s death in Supernatural was already quite tragic, Supernatural: Origins made it more so when it revealed that Dean stopped talking after his mother’s death. In Supernatural: Origins #1, John Winchester stands at Elton Ridge, where Mary told him she’d marry him, and laments about life after her death. Part of this monologue includes a reference to Sam and Dean, with John explaining that “Seems like Sam can’t stop crying ever since” and that “Dean hasn’t uttered a word since I told him you’re gone.” Dean’s apparent mutism proposes a new harsher reality in watching Supernatural season 1.

Supernatural: Origins' canon status has been debated as there are a few details that were changed from the show. One such detail was John Winchester not acquiring the iconic Impala until much later. However, following fan backlash, the Impala was to be re-added in an updated version.

Dean does eventually talk again, but his silence after Mary’s death shows how deeply his mother’s death affected him. In Supernatural, Dean is portrayed as a very talkative and funny character, especially in the early seasons, and the only times he seems to be quiet are when he is sad. Therefore, for him to be completely silent is highly out of character for the well-known joker, highlighting just how traumatic this event was for him. This is slightly hinted at in Supernatural season 1, episode 9, “Home,” when Dean finds himself somewhat speechless at the sight of his mom’s ghost.

Supernatural Origins - Dean's first words to John after Mary'd death

The prequel comic not only touches on how the Winchesters dealt with Mary’s death but also explains the origins of Dean’s relationship with John as seen in Supernatural. In Supernatural: Origins #1, John and Missouri find a message suggesting that Sam and Dean might be in danger. Rushing back to a friend’s house, who is babysitting the young Winchesters, John finds Mary’s friend Julie murdered, but Sam and Dean remain unscathed. Reunited with his son, Dean utters his first word to John since his mother’s death – “daddy” – marking the start of Dean looking to his father during a crisis.

Dean’s first word after Mary’s death being "daddy" explains Dean's unquestioning loyalty to his father in Supernatural, because Dean has no one else to rely on. Dean has to obey his father in Supernatural because it keeps him safe in a traumatic time. Furthermore, John’s earlier comments that Dean might be “waiting for me to do something about it now” reveal John’s mentality and show that John places a lot on Dean’s shoulders, often thinking his son is older than he is. Supernatural: Origins’ details therefore justify and explain a lot about Dean and his relationship with John in Supernatural.
