Summary
- Sam and Dean Winchester relied heavily on their arsenal of weapons to hunt and save lives in Supernatural. Without these weapons, they wouldn't have been as successful.
- The demon-killing blade introduced in season 3 was a game changer, making it easier to kill demons. However, it also resulted in collateral damage as it killed the humans possessed by the demons.
- While Sam and Dean could have done more to save the demon's human hosts, they started prioritizing killing demons over saving lives, making them the bad guys in Supernatural.
Sam and Dean Winchester had many weapons to help them fight monsters in Supernatural, but one that proved most useful, actually made them bad guys. Dean had a full trunk full of weapons. They had their machetes to kill vampires, silver blades that killed shapeshifters, their main handguns, and, of course, The Colt, which killed almost anything. Dean even tried to use throwing stars in the Supernatural series finale, but unfortunately, Sam stopped him.
Sam and Dean’s weapons were important. This was part of their business of “hunting things, saving people, the family business.” They couldn’t do their job without these weapons. They wouldn’t have been able to save as many lives as they did without the arsenal Dean kept in his trunk. Unfortunately, there was some collateral damage when they were saving the world. There was one weapon they used that proved enormously helpful, but not in the way they intended it to be.
Supernatural's Demon-Killing Blade Killed The Human Hosts Too
It was a game changer in Supernatural season 3 when Ruby was introduced with the demon-killing blade. This made it much easier to kill demons. They didn’t have to trap the demon. They could kill it. Unfortunately, killing the demon also killed the humans. When they exorcised the demon, that would save the host, assuming the person wasn’t too far gone yet. If so, Dean and Sam could get them to the hospital. After they started using the blade, they saved a lot fewer people.
Were Sam & Dean REALLY Killing Humans During Supernatural
Unfortunately, there were many human casualties in Supernatural. Many of them were killed when they were possessed. Dean killed many of the evil Styne family and a couple of the British Men of Letters. Dean has more humans on his kill list than Sam does. Dean could definitely be more ruthless at times. While Sam using demon blood to exorcise demons was bad, he brought up a great point of the blade killing the human while what he was doing saved them.
Sam and Dean could have done more to ensure their demons’ victims survived. Bobby stabbed himself with the knife and lived. That was because the boys rushed him to the hospital. He was paralyzed, but he lived. They didn’t even try with their other victims. While the knife made it easier for them to kill demons, it negated the entire purpose of their family business, making Sam and Dean the bad guys in Supernatural.
Some of the victims could have been too far gone. Many of the demons they exorcised left their host to the point of near death. They were always devastated when that happened in earlier seasons. Unfortunately, in later seasons they didn’t worry as much about what happened to the host after the demon left the body or was killed. It would have been nice if Supernatural continued showing Sam and Dean trying to save the possessed humans.
