The spinoff to The Winchesters, will be released this October, continuing this world of supernatural monster hunters. While some fans are confused about the premise of the series, many are excited to see young Mary and John Winchester teaming up to fight evil.
In the original series, though John Winchester dies early on in season 2, he has a lasting influence on his sons. He proves to be a big impact on his oldest son, Dean. John and Dean Winchester are a lot alike, sharing many personality traits.
Harsh Demeanor
One of Jensen Ackles' best roles is Dean Winchester, well-known for his quirky and badass personality. However, Dean was also known to have a sober, harsh personality in serious situations.
In this way, he was very similar to his father. John Winchester was often criticized as a poor father for the stern way he usually talked to his sons. He was so obsessed with hunting and the lifestyle that came with it, teaching his boys how to be safe came off as harsh. This harsh demeanor rubbed off most on Dean.
Family Loyalty
One of the most irable qualities the father and son shared was the dedication to their family over any other ally. While one of the biggest arguments Supernatural fans have is if Sam or Dean were more often right, Dean was known to focus on what was right for their family.
This often led to fights between the two brothers, especially earlier in the series. Dean was more concerned with his father and what would be expected of them than Sam usually was. All the Winchesters were loyal to each other, but Dean inherited his father's blind loyalty to their family values.
Repressed Emotions
After the trauma of losing his wife to the yellow-eyed demon, John Winchester rarely showed emotion. While it was clear he loved his children, he was so obsessed with the fear of monsters and demons that he showed anger and paranoia more than any other emotion.
Dean Winchester has trouble opening up about his concerns when it comes to whatever challenges they're facing, and rarely even spoke about his feelings to his brother. When he did let people know how he was feeling, it often involved a lot of frustration and anger.
Dedication To The Hunt
For John and Dean Winchester, hunter monsters and saving people was more of a lifestyle. They believed their purpose in life was being a monster hunter and they did little else besides that.
Hunting supernatural beings was an obsession for them. Sam eventually became dedicated to the lifestyle again, but he repeatedly tried to get out of the life and try to have a normal existence. On the other hand, Dean, like his father, rarely considered what his life would be like without this purpose.
Protective Of Sam
One of Dean Winchester's best quotes is when he tells Sam he will never leave him. Although the two get into some horrible fights, Dean proves he would die (multiple times) to protect his younger brother.
John Winchester was upset about Sam abandoning the family cause, but, on the other hand, was always harder on Dean. When John came back briefly in season 14, he its he made a mistake giving Sam a hard time about wanting a normal life. When the boys were younger, Dean shouldered the burden of knowing about monsters and what their father did, both of them keeping Sam innocent as long as they could.
Empathy With Hunters
Throughout their years as hunters, both men were understanding with hunters and the way the viewed the world. Most hunters had a lost a person tragically due to a supernatural attack, sharing in the heartbreak the Winchester's went through when Azazel killed Mary.
Many of the hunters are portrayed as brutal and harsh as these two men. Given how much they related to other hunters, they usually understood when one of them appeared a bit reckless or too emotionally driven.
Love For Mary
Dean was the only child of the Winchesters that was old enough to her. This gave him a special connection with his father that his younger brother couldn't relate to.
When Mary was brought back from the dead by Amara, Sam felt like he was meeting her for the first time. On the other hand, Dean was overwhelmed with the distant memories of his childhood and the guilt that his father wasn't there anymore. While John was obsessed with avenging his dead wife, Dean was very protective of her later on.
Commanding
One of the most iconic Supernatural quotes is when Dean tells Sam, "Driver picks the music; shotgun shuts his cakehole." In the first season, this was just a taste of how he inherited his father's commanding personality.
John was the patriarch of the family and expected his sons to follow his lead without question. Though Sam and Dean were a team later on in the series, Dean was never one to take commands and follow directions. He normally chose to follow his own path and reasoning rather than take guidance from others.
Stubborn
In season 1 and the flashbacks throughout the series, the audience sees that John was a stubborn man who didn't like to take advice from his sons. He thought his way was the only way and wanted to take the reins.
Dean proved to be as stubborn as his father. He listened to his friends and Sam when he wanted to, but if he was determined to do something, there was nothing anyone could do to stop him. This also made it difficult for him to forgive someone once he felt they had done something wrong or betrayed him.
Self-Deprecating
John and Dean were outwardly portrayed as arrogant characters who thought highly of themselves. However, when it came down to who should make a sacrifice, they were the ones to step up and put themselves in the line of fire.
Before John sacrifices himself to save Dean's life, he previously is seen demanding Sam kill him to kill the demon possessing his body. Similarly, Dean makes a deal with a crossroads demon to save Sam's life in season three. While both of these actions are irable, the men also express the fact that they don't think their lives are more important than the cause or other peoples' lives.
