great supernatural TV shows.

Some of the wildest episodes of Supernatural see the Winchesters living a twisted version of Groundhog Day, hopping from TV channel to TV channel, and starring in an in-universe version of their own show. These meta installments always leave an impression, and many of them make up the best Supernatural episodes overall. They throw Sam and Dean into some truly bizarre and hilarious scenarios. And one of these installments reimagines the brothers in an animated format, placing them in the same universe as Batman.

Supernatural’s Scooby-Doo Episode Means Sam And Dean Were Briefly In A DC Universe

Scooby-Doo & Batman Exist In The Same Universe

Although Dean obviously gets joy from uttering the words "I'm Batman," he and Sam never actually appear on-screen alongside DC's Caped Crusader. They do, however, find themselves working with Mystery Inc. in Supernatural season 13's Scooby-Doo episode, "Scoobynatural." This installment follows Sam and Dean as they're transported to the world of Scooby-Doo, with their journey through Dean's new television even transforming them into animated characters. It's wildly entertaining and bizarre to watch them interact with the Scooby gang, though after their trips to other parallel universes, it's not totally surprising. After all, the Winchester brothers and Mystery Inc. have similar professions.

If Sam and Dean enter that reality in "Scoobynatural," it means they've been on the same plane of existtence as Batman.

And Scooby-Doo exists in the DC multiverse, as there are numerous crossovers featuring the Scooby gang and DC characters. The animated film Scooby-Doo & Batman: The Brave and the Bold features one of the strangest Scooby-Doo crossovers to date, which sees Mystery Inc. working with Batman against a common enemy. There are other crossovers between Scooby-Doo and Batman as well, confirming they exist in the same universe. And if Sam and Dean enter that reality in "Scoobynatural," it means they've been on the same plane of existence as Batman.

The earliest Scooby-Doo and DC crossovers took place in two 1972 episodes of The New Scooby-Doo Movies, which were released together as Scooby-Doo Meets Batman in 2004.

This is an intriguing revelation, and it's a shame it doesn't amount to more. With all the meta episodes Supernatural has, it would have been on brand for the show to feature a DC crossover. Given the CW had multiple DC shows airing at the same time as Supernatural, it wouldn't have been difficult to accomplish either. And Supernatural has so many connections to DC that it would have been a hilarious addition to the show.

There Were Great Opportunities For Jokes In A Crossover

Supernatural's Sam and Dean sit on the Impala

Although Supernatural doesn't have an on-screen DC crossover, its characters and actors boast connections to the DC Universe. Dean Winchester is obviously a fan, as evidenced by his "I'm Batman" bit. It would be hilarious to see him actually meet Batman, with the show returning to this reference in a satisfying way. And Ackles himself actually voiced Batman in the Tomorrowverse after portraying Red Hood in Batman: Under the Red Hood. Needless to say, there was plenty of potential for jokes in a crossover between the two shows.

Ackles isn't the only Supernatural star to have a role in a DC project, either. John Winchester star Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Bela Talbot actor Lauren Cohan play Bruce Wayne's parents, Thomas and Martha, in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. And Meg Donnelly, who plays Mary Campbell in The Winchesters, voices Supergirl in the Tomorrowverse, the same universe Ackles' Batman is in. With so much overlap between Supernatural and DC, it's shocking a more direct crossover never happened — though the Scooby-Doo one brought them to the same reality.
