Despite coronavirus-fueled shutdowns, their most notorious nemesis, Castiel.
Supernatural, which began airing in 2005, is one of TV's longest running dramas. It started out on The WB before moving to The CW after UPN's merger. The series is quickly wrapping up loose ends and filling in storylines to lay Supernatural to rest, even if they have to take the whole world with it. Tonight's episode, titled "Destiny's Child," is the show's 13th episode in a planned 20-episode season. However, whether the show would be able to finish its run was unknown after the coronavirus shuttered production, the same way it did nearly all TV shows.
Dabb took to Twitter today to put fans at ease about this, first explaining, "Due to the shutdown, this will be our last episode for awhile." He later issued a clarification, sharing that "We have filmed through episode 18, however our visual effects and sound departments have closed because of the outbreak. So, right now, the episodes can't be finished." Dabb concluded by assuring his Twitter followers, “we, the CW, and Warner Bros fully intend to return and finish the series. It’s not a matter of 'if,' it's a matter of 'when.'" Check out Dabb's tweets about Supernatural below:
Supernatural is hardly the only Hollywood production affected by the coronavirus. Many across the country and world have ceased filming over the last few weeks. Some creatives have been able to work on pre and post-production from home, while others, like those working on Supernatural, haven't been able to. It makes sense for visual effects and sound especially, as those jobs often require special software and equipment that may not be accessible at home.
This news about Supernatural is likely a relief to fans who weren't sure the show would be able to finish its story. After 15 seasons with the characters, it's understandable they were concerned. With Dabb's announcement, viewers now know they'll see a proper farewell for Dean, Sam, and others. As Dabb explained, it's hard to have a time frame for it at this point, but at least fans know Supernatural will be able to complete its run eventually.
