An acclaimed NBCsitcom is getting the remake treatment. Although a few genre-defining comedies on the network have steadfastly avoided going through a revival or a reboot, such as Friends and Seinfeld, another influential comedy has had several iterations. The Office originated as a British workplace sitcom, spearheaded by Ricky Gervais. Still, following the global reach of the U.S. version, more country-specific offshoots have popped up.

There are several remakes of The Office, including versions that recreate standout scenes from the original. There has also been the recent Australian take on The Office for Prime Video, which went in a different direction by casting a female character in the bumbling Michael Scott role. A more recent well-liked NBC workplace comedy is getting a remake, albeit only the second.

Superstore Is Getting A Remake

The Project Will Be For South Africa

A remake of Superstore included America Ferrera, Ben Feldman, Lauren Ash, Colton Dunn, Nico Santos, Nichole Sakura, and Mark McKinney. The series received consistently strong reviews, often regarded as an underrated workplace sitcom.

Showmax is also planning a South African adaptation of The Office.

Deadline confirms that African streaming platform Showmax has ordered a local version of NBCUniversal's Superstore. It will be a Zulu-language adaptation that's produced locally by Barkers Media in association with Universal International Studios. Production is expected to begin later this year, while the casting and exact story details are unknown. Executives and decision-makers shared thoughts on the series in a pair of remarks.

Nicola van Niekerk, Executive Head of Programming at Showmax’s South Africa-based parent MultiChoice, referred to Cloud 9 and praised the original in a statement:

“We’re on Cloud 9. I laughed my way through every episode of Superstore and can’t wait to see how the funny and loveable characters are reimagined in our complex country.”

This was echoed by Hannah Mabruk, VP, Format Sales for NBCUniversal Formats, who expressed excitement about seeing Superstore in a new light:

“I cannot wait to see Superstore take on a whole new life in South Africa. It’s a format that resonates with audiences around the world because of its undeniable humour, heart, and universal themes of community and friendship flourishing in the workplace. Together with our longtime partners at Showmax and the team at Barkers Media, we look forward to bringing a uniquely South African spin to these lovable characters in a fresh and exciting new way.”

Showmax is a natural home for a Superstore remake, considering that it also streams the original. It is the second remake of the NBC show following a Spanish-language adaptation. With the title of Supertitlán, the first remake debuted in 2022 and aired 48 episodes. It featured a large ensemble of main and recurring actors.

There's Another Show Worth Checking Out

For fans that miss Superstore and Spitzer's comedy, the creator has a St. Denis Medical which is a mockumentary hospital sitcom. It features some of the same actors from his previous series and is worth checking out while the Showmax adaptation gets underway.
