I watched Glee in college and my roommate would get mad at me that I would skip class and binge it without waiting for him. Good times. This shows feels like a fever dream that I don't want to wake up from... most of the time. It's absurd and campy but fits with what the show is about.

What started as a fun little show about underdogs and musical theater got too big for its britches, thinking it could take on any and all special episode subjects, forgetting its original promise that all musical numbers would either be diagetic or fantasy sequences, and failing like so many shows before it to still work when the original cast graduated high school. And that's what you missed on Glee.

Some of the music in Glee is genuinely really good. It is kind of campy and dramatic but it is the kind of series where that works and is almost expected by the audience.

Ultimately one of the weirdest shows ever made, with a mean streak just long enough to be interesting but not long enough to actually say anything. Sue Sylvester is a standout character, but even she is depicted unevenly. A parody that was almost instantly seduced into becoming what it was trying to make fun of.

Glee at its best is phenomenally inventive television. Producing a minimum of 3 quality musical numbers per episode is no easy feat, and it somehow manages to pull off bizarre plot points that shouldn't work at all. However, the show fails to maintain its initial charm in later seasons. Bland new characters are introduced while existing beloved characters have their hard-earned personality growth tossed down the drain by the end of the series. Glee has its absolutely iconic moments that deserve to be revisited, but its lowest points are almost unbearable to watch.
