  • Have you ever wanted pretty white people to explain jazz and blues to you? You're in luck! Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling do have great chemistry, but this movie feels as false as the technicolor visuals. (That isn't an indictment of the visuals; the colors and cinematography are this film's great strength.)

  • Though I was literally screaming with excitement when Moonlight won Best Picture, I do think La La Land is fantastic. The music, the color pallette, the main performances are all working well, and does lead to one of the best closing sequences in recent film history.

  • La La Land is directed really well and has beautiful cinematography. The music is extremely catchy and easy to get stuck in your head. Unfortunately, the movie is a bit overrated, and the ending comes across as unrealistic, showing a hopeful depiction of Hollywood, acting, and a life working in the arts. Unfortunately, this makes it hard to appreciate the great performances of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling.

  • Sheer chemistry from Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, smart direction from Damien Chazelle, and one of the best original musical scores of the 21st century. Chazelle could do no wrong when La La Land came out back in 2016 as he was basically seen as the industry's wonder kid. Whiplash and La La Land are both so great when it comes it integrating music into their stories that it's easy to see why both were loved by critics.

Looking back from 2024, La La Land can feel a bit out of touch, as the air of wonder and inspiration in the film can feel somewhat ridiculous nowadays if it hadn't already been back in 2016. While the message of hope and ion are nice things to bank on in a musical about the entertainment industry, it seems a bit tone-deaf in retrospect. Still, the film is both a musical and cinematic achievement and hopefully won't be the peak of the talented Chazelle's directing career.

La La Land Review
9/10

La La Land makes for Damien Chazelle's most technically-accomplished love letter to music yet, as well as the filmmaker's most poignant work.
