  • With so long between the fourth and fifth entries into the franchise, it's smart for Scream to take on the idea of "legacy sequels" and essentially reboot its cast. The idea that legacy characters are no longer safe and that there's still more to the lore that we don't know is appealing and opens up a lot of new doors for the movies. Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera are worthy successors to Neve Campbell and would have made great leads for a whole new generation of Scream movies. It's a shame they only got to do one more.

  • This movie was just okay. I'm a big horror fan and as far as the Scream films go, this one doesn't particularly stand out among the bunch as anything noteworthy. The twist at the end felt predictable and it was not hard at all to guess who was behind the Ghostface mask, so I wish it had been a little more difficult to figure out how the movie was going to play out.

  • Better than the majority of other legacy sequels but doesn't do anything better than Scream 4 that came out a decade before it. Thought it handled the new cast of characters well, and it is always nice to see the original trio back. Happy that it revitalized my favorite franchise even if that was possibly short lived.

  • Knowing that legacy characters from the original films were returning, I decided to watch Scream. The return of faces like Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers, and Dewey Riley gave the movie some nostalgia and a thrifty feel that comes with being a horror movie sometimes. More importantly, the dedication at the very end to Wes Craven was so nice; it was truly a great gesture toward the original director.Kudos especially to Jenna Ortega, who nailed Tara Carpenter; one could feel the new level of intensity she brought into the series.

  • A serviceable repeat in a franchise that's moved further and further from funny horror to dark comedy. Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera are great as the leads, but the returning cast hold them back.

Scream Review: Wes Craven Would Be Proud Of Sharp 2022 Horror Sequel
7/10

Scream feels familiar, but it's unafraid of criticizing its existence while providing commentary on the new wave of horror and toxicity in fandom.
