As one of the newest streaming services out there, renewed for a second and third season just days after the first season released.
One of the reasons Ted Lasso has been so successful is that it's truly a feel-good television show and everyone needed cheering up in the midst of the pandemic. Audiences don't even have to be interested in soccer to fall in love with these heartfelt and often flawed characters who carry the series.
Rupert Mannion
When it comes to truly awful characters, Ted Lasso has only one, and it's Rupert Mannion. Thankfully, fans don't have to put up with his nonsense too much since he's more of a minor recurring character in the series.
Rupert is the former owner of the football team and Rebecca's ex-wife who has made it his mission to be a constant thorn in her side. He wastes no opportunity to show off that he's moved on with someone younger than her, going as far as rubbing it in Rebecca's face that he's going to be a parent, something she always wanted to be.
Jamie Tartt
Jamie Tartt is an interesting character because on the surface he seems like yet another jerk but there's actually a lot more depth to him. As the star player on the team, Jamie makes sure that everyone he comes in with knows how great he is.
He regularly hogs the ball in order to make the winning goal and he's constantly ripping on his fellow teammates. But underneath all that ego, is a twenty-something dude who loves football and has a pretty terrible family life. While fans didn't get to see Jamie redeem himself in the first season, redemption is certainly on the horizon.
Rebecca Welton
While there's no denying that Rebecca does a handful of awful things during the first season of Ted Lasso, fans also understand that her personal life has blown up on her. After all, her ex-husband cheated on her and is now engaged to a young woman who has the exact same name.
Rebecca might have tried to sabotage Ted and the team to get back at Rupert but by the end of the season, fans start to see her changing for the better. Not only does she let Ted stay on as coach after the team gets relegated, but she also has a budding friendship with Keeley.
Leslie Higgins
After helping Rupert cheat on Rebecca for years, Leslie Higgins has found himself reporting to Rebecca now that she's in charge of the team. Higgins takes his new role in stride though and sets out to prove to Rebecca that he s her no matter what.
While Higgins starts out as Rebecca's right-hand man helping her try to sabotage the team, he eventually becomes the voice of reason, realizing that sabotaging the team isn't going to make her happier. Instead, he befriends Ted and the other coaches and becomes a great comedic character.
Coach Beard
Coach Beard may be a coach of few words but those few words have managed to capture the hearts of fans across the world. As Ted's right-hand man, Coach Beard is tasked with keeping Ted educated about the rules of football while also helping him coach.
He also helps keep Ted in check, reminding him that winning actually does matter now that they're not coaching college players. Coach Beard ends up doubling as a therapist thanks to his great listening skills and he helps Nathan realize his true potential as a coach.
Sam Obisanya
Of all the football players, Sam Obisanya has the best attitude and the best backstory. Sam moved from Nigeria to England to chase his dreams of one day becoming an Olympic football player. The only problem is, he's been a bit homesick for his country but thankfully, Ted gets right on that.
Not only is Sam an extremely talented player, but he also has a heart of gold. He never puts any of his teammates down and instead, regularly lifts them up. He even pays attention to Nate when the rest of the team would rather laugh at his awkwardness.
Keeley Jones
When it comes to female characters in sports movies and shows, they aren't always well-written. Thankfully, Keeley Jones doesn't fall into the category and instead has become a fan favorite.
While Keeley originally starts out as the girlfriend of Jamie Tartt, she ends up becoming a force of nature when she realizes that she has her own dreams that deserved to be chased. Not only does she not put up with any of the footballers, but she also extremely successful in her own right. So successful, that she ends up helping the team with their PR campaigns. Keeley is proof that girls can be smart, pretty, and badass.
Roy Kent
Roy Kent might not like to it it, but he actually has quite a lot in common with Jamie Tartt. As the oldest member of the team, Roy knows what it's like to be the young star and he can't help but feel a bit jealous of Jamie and his huge ego.
While Roy comes off as cynical and Brash, he really is just a giant teddy bear. He has an adorable niece whom he adores, he manages to get the team to stop harassing Nate, and he doesn't throw a total hissy fit when Ted doesn't start him in the championship game.
Nathan "Nate" Shelley
Nate Shelley could have very easily faded into the background or become the Garry Gergich of the series but the writers knew he had more potential than that. In fact, Nate has some of the best character development of any of the characters on the show.
He starts out as the team's insecure and awkward "kit man," who hasn't quite found his voice. However, by the end of the season, Nate has become an official coach who isn't afraid to tell the team the ugly truth because he knows it'll make them play better.
Ted Lasso
Ted Lasso carries the entire series on his back which is a good thing considering he's the title character. When it comes to fictional coaches, no one has more faith in their team than Ted Lasso.
Not only does he unconditionally believe in his team, but he constantly sees the best in the people around him even when they don't deserve it. He often puts other people's feelings above his own and he truly doesn't care about winning as long as the team manages to learn from their mistakes. Ted Lasso has a heart of gold and is without a doubt the most liked character of the series.
