Ted Lasso has been dropping hints that a romantic relationship between Ted and Rebecca could happen later in the show, and while that theory has gathered some notable among viewers, it would actually be a big mistake. From the beginning, Ted Lasso has found success by consistently subverting expectations in its characters and storylines. While there are reasons to believe a relationship between Ted and Rebecca could work, it would ultimately end up hurting the show.
In many ways, Ted Lasso and Rebecca have had parallel storylines through the series. Both are struggling with the fallout from difficult divorces, which force them each to confront personal demons and mental health issues they had attempted to bury. That parallelism is particularly strong in the Ted Lasso episode “No Weddings and a Funeral,” which features a scene of Ted and Rebecca both grappling with their complicated relationships with their fathers in different places at the same time.
On paper, Ted and Rebecca seem like a good match. They both clearly care deeply for each other, and have always been there to help when they’re needed. Plus, Rebecca’s breakup with Sam in Ted Lasso season 2, episode 10 reopens the potential for them to get together. But unfortunately for those crossing their fingers for Ted and Rebecca to date, it wouldn’t turn out well for the show as a whole. The long-term “will they/won’t they” romance arc is a classic feature of sitcoms, and playing into it would be counterintuitive for a series like Ted Lasso, which has done so much to subvert tropes and expectations.
Like season 1 before it, Ted Lasso season 2 is a story about people helping each other. It’s a story about , growth, and mutual encouragement – qualities Ted tries to display toward others, but which he struggles to accept when extended to himself. Ted's relationship with Rebecca is special and beautiful because they want to genuinely help one another, and while that kind of can lead to a more romantic connection, it would undercut the message of Ted Lasso if it did for Ted and Rebecca.
One of the most common traps sitcoms and romcoms fall into is the fallacious idea that true , care, and enduring affection must inevitably lead to romance. It’s a story that’s been told well before, but which more often than not ends up feeling forced. Ted and Rebecca’s relationship is a gorgeous, compelling tale of two people honestly trying to help each other become better, and it’s specifically because they do so from a platonic place that it feels so fresh and genuine. Ted Lasso season 2 surely still has some surprises left in store, but if it wants to maintain the integrity of the show, a romance between Ted and Rebecca might be one to avoid.
