The Amazing Race has had some incredible moments over the years, most of which have come courtesy of The Roadblocks.
For those not familiar with how the reality competition works, the "Roadblocks" is a point in the race in which teams have to complete a certain task in order to move on to that round's checkpoint. These roadblocks have near-32 year run and some of them have become truly memorable in the show's history--from a contestant refusing to eat a glass full of caviar to having to find a clue in a farm full of hay bales.
The Sandcastle Dig (Season 22)
Right from the gate, Season 22 was going to be dozy for the contestants. In the first leg at Eden Beach in Motu Piti A'au, racers who sat out of the first roadblock had to dig through a whopping 400 sandcastles to find a clue that was buried beneath it.
If they searched a sandcastle that didn't have a clue, they had to rebuild that castle before continuing to search. It was an exhausting challenge in which three teams took penalties.
Transporting Tobacco Leaves (Season 19)
On the surface, this doesn't seem like a daunting task, but the racers who into this roadblock had to carry ten tobacco leave bundles that weighed 200 pounds each through a warehouse to a drop-off point on the other side of the warehouse.
The only thing the racers had was a hand-cart that was only big enough for one bag at a time, making for a tough challenge.
Climbing Hon Yen Ngua (Season 10)
Looking at Hon Yen Ngua in Vietnam, it would be nearly impossible for anyone to clime its 90-foot, sheer face. That's what the racers who encountered the roadblock on the fourth leg in Season 10 had to do in order to proceed in the race, using a mechanical ascender to make the intense climb.
As creative as it was death-defying, the Hon Yen Ngua climb is one of the more forgotten memorable roadblocks in the history of the series.
Victoria Falls Bungee Jump (Season 27)
In the first roadblock racers encountered on Leg 6 of the Season 27 race, a team mender had to dawn a strap-on harness and bungee jump from the Victoria Falls Bridge.
This jump is 364 feet, straight down, and racers had to achieve this in order to move on. It is one of the most terrifying roadblocks in the history of The Amazing Race.
The Ostrich Egg (Season 5)
Season 5 was full of memorable roadblocks, one of which involved a huge ostrich egg. In it, a team member had to crack open one of the eggs, pour it into a wooden bowl until it was full, then cook and eat the egg.
For those not sure how many eggs that was, one ostrich egg was the equivalent of two dozen chicken eggs. So, in essence, a team member had to eat 12 eggs to get their next clue. Pretty darn creative.
Sushi Roulette (Season 15)
Right from the start, Season 15 was going to provide some memorable moments with the first roadblock being a Japanese-style game called Sushi Roulette.
One team member had to spin a wheel that contained different kinds of sushi, and the only way they could proceed to their next clue was to eat one of two "wasabi bombs," sushi that was filled with hot wasabi.
Jump From A Pier (Season 7)
On paper, this seemed like a simple task, but what racers had to do in the final roadblock of Season 7 was anything but simple. One team member had to jump 30 feet off of a pier, in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, and swim 90 yards to a buoy, where their next clue would be waiting for them.
It was an exhausting feat that could have made-or-break the remaining teams in the race.
Build A Trebuchet (Season 30)
One of the more creative roadblocks occurred in the fifth leg of Season 30. In it, one team member had to build a trebuchet (a catapult) correctly from the parts that were given to them.
The trebuchet had to be to the satisfaction of the soldier and to make things more creative, the team member that wasn't participating in the roadblock was held prisoner in a stockade.
The Caviar Roadblock (Season 5)
This was one of the more classic roadblocks in the history of the competition. In Pushin, Russia, a team member had to eat a kilogram of caviar in order to get their next clue.
That kilogram is converted to 2.2 pounds on the metric scale, meaning that a team member had to read over two pounds of pure caviar in order to advance.
The Haybales (Seasons 6 and 15)
In what's considered the most creative and tiring roadblock in an absolute nightmare for teams that encountered it. In the Season 6 premiere of this roadblock, one team member had to search through 270 haybales to find their next clue.
Only 20 of the 270 hay bales had the clue, leading to hours of searching just for one clue. In Season 15, it was presented as a switchback roadblock, and although it was lessened to just 160 haybales, the challenge was still as daunting as it was in Season 6.
