With The Amazing Race season 34 drawing closer to its conclusion, fans of the show are praising the season for its overall likability and lack of drama. Long-time viewers will seasons when it was hard to find anyone to root for, because all the teams seemed to have a nasty edge. But this season is different, with a general camaraderie between the teams that makes it easy and fun to watch.
On Reddit, one fan extreme reactions to stress on The Amazing Race are not all that common. The general consensus was summed up simply by yet another commenter who said, “Everyone is competitive but respectful of each team and of their partners.”
The Amazing Race's Drama Rarely Equals Success
Of course, not all fans of The Amazing Race agree with each other. Another Reddit weighed in with a comment, “This season everyone seems like lovely people but that doesn’t make for very entertaining tv.” This may be the type of fan that the show is trying to lure when casting overly combative teams or traditional villains. But fans are wondering why teams would choose to spread drama in the first place. Only three of the most villainous teams on The Amazing Race have actually won the race (four when counting Colin and Christie, but they won on their redemption season). Overall, the winners may have their moments, but they know when to put their heads down, be quiet, and get the job done.
Reality TV is an instant fame crucible, in which any contestant from anywhere can rise to super stardom on the basis of a single season, or even a single episode. Maybe the contestants are trying to be “memorable” in an effort to cash in on their appearance. And notably, one of the worst villains on The Amazing Race, Rachel Reilly, was already a known quantity from her appearances on Big Brother. But it seems like an odd choice when a million dollars are on the line.
Regardless, The Amazing Race seems to be returning to its roots. There have always been villains, but the focus of the show was always on teams making their way around the world, competing in tasks inspired by their location. The lack of drama on season 34 gives fans the chance to enjoy those aspects of the experience, rather than taking sides in endless arguments between cast .
