With nearly three years already gone since the first movie came out, The Batman — Part II's development has been far rockier, with filming start and release dates delayed multiple times.
Now, Warner Bros. is moving its release calendar around, resulting in The Batman — Part II's release date being delayed. The long-awaited sequel is now hitting theaters on October 1, 2027, essentially a full year after its original October 2, 2026 date, with Tom Cruise and Alejandro G. Iñárritu's mystery project taking its place. An update from Deadline does, at least, also come with a production update that the sequel is still on track for a "late summer" 2025 start and will be a "VFX-heavy production", thus necessitating the release shift.
What The Release Date Delay Means For The Batman — Part II
It's Not All Bad News On The DC Sequel's Front
On the surface, the sequel's release date update marks the latest of The Batman — Part II's woes, particularly when knowing it's the second delay it's received just this year. At the start of 2023, it was set for an October 2025 date before this past March brought word that the movie was being pushed back to October 2026. Reports on the previous delay indicated it stemmed from the dual SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strikes of 2023.

10 Ways Pattinson's Dark Knight Will Be Different In The Batman 2
Based on The Batman's ending and a handful of updates, Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight will be different in The Batman 2 in multiple ways.
For those who have been following its development closely, though, it may not come as much of a surprise that the movie's release has been delayed yet again. Reeves has frequently indicated the script is still being worked on for The Batman — Part II, recently confirming that he and Mattson Tomlin were "finishing" the script in time for its Summer 2025 filming start. Given a final draft has not yet been confirmed for the follow-up, it seems entirely possible Reeves just needs a little more time to finish up, and therefore a delay in release.
Our Take On The Batman — Part II's Latest Release Date Delay
Reeves Is Planning Something Big
As disappointing as yet another release date delay is for the movie, I still find myself largely intrigued by every update shared for The Batman — Part II. The above production update, in particular, raises a lot of curiosity regarding its "VFX-heavy" nature. The first movie certainly wasn't an exclusively practical production, notably in the Batmobile and Penguin chase, Batman's flight away from the Gotham City Police Department, and the Gotham Square Gardens' tsunami destruction. However, reports pointed towards this still only taking up $20 million of its estimated $200 million production budget, therefore not being a VFX-reliant one.
Should the above report be accurate in Reeves increasing the use of VFX for the sequel, The Batman — Part II is sure to be far more expensive, but also a bigger-scale story. Not much is known about what the follow-up will entail, particularly which villain the titular hero will be facing, but a larger-scale budget could see the likes of the Court of Owls or the grounded Mr. Freeze that Reeves has talked about wanting to adapt in the past.
