The Batman director Matt Reeves has addressed Robert Pattinson's chances of being the DCU's Chapter One.
Speaking with Josh Horowitz, Matt Reeves seemingly left the door open for Robert Pattinson's Batman to James Gunn's DC Universe.
Reeves did not give a definitive answer to either side of the argument, but The Batman franchise creator revealed it will depend on "whether or not it makes sense." Reeves' immediate focus is to finish writing The Batman - Part II's story. The movie was recently delayed to 2027 as the director finishes the script, but Reeves is committed to a 2025 filming start. As for Pattinson in the DCU, there is still hope, as Reeves says, "We’ll have to see where that goes." Check out the full quote below:
"It really comes down to whether or not it makes sense. I think what’s been great is it was really a kind of story I wanted to tell - we’re calling it The Epic Crime Saga and all of that - which is the thrust of what we want to do, and it’s been important to be able to play that out.
And James and Peter have been really, really great about that, and they are letting us do that. And what the future brings, I can’t really tell you. I have no idea right now, except that my head is down now about getting The Batman - Part II shooting and to make it something really special, which, of course, is the most important thing.
I don’t know, we’ll have to see where that goes."
What Matt Reeves' Robert Pattinson DCU Batman Comments Mean
The Batman Franchise And The DCU Might Still Merge After All
It is interesting that both James Gunn and Matt Reeves' latest comments about Robert Pattinson's chances of being the DCU's Batman are more positive than they once were. Batman has even made his first appearance in the shared universe, with a sturdier version of the Dark Knight appearing as a cameo in Creature Commandos. Since Gunn said that heroes who cameo in the animated series will not necessarily look like they do on the show in future live-action projects, Pattinson could still play the DCU's Batman.

The Batman 2's Release Delay Officially Breaks A 59-Year-Old Dark Knight Sequel Trend
After another major delay, Robert Pattinson and director Matt Reeves' The Batman 2 will now officially break a long-running Batman movie sequel trend.
Reeves' comments leave the door open for that to happen. The director makes it seem like there is no hard answer to that question at the moment, so Pattinson's Batman could very well be the DCU's if two things happen. Reeves claims that it would have to make sense for it to occur. Adding to that, the director feels it is important that he fulfills his plans for The Batman franchise, which DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran are letting him do. As long as Reeves' creative vision remains intact, Pattinson's Batman could end up in the DCU.
Our Take On Matt Reeves' Robert Pattinson DCU Batman Comments
The Move Would Make Even More Sense After The Batman 2's Delay
I was initially against the idea of Pattinson's Batman coming to the DCU for two reasons. First, The Batman franchise is grounded, while the DCU is more fantastical like the comics. Second, Pattinson is too young for a Bruce Wayne that is the father to a young Damian and leads an entire Bat-Family, which is the plan for the DCU. However, since The Batman - Part II was delayed to 2027, Pattinson will be 41 by then, making him perfect for this version of Batman, and Reeves' comments make the possibility feel very real. Otherwise, he would have denied it.
