Peacock has struck gold with its brand-new adaptation of the classic thriller novel, and now The Day of the Jackal has been renewed for a second season. Based on the eponymous book by Frederick Forsyth, the gripping spy story modernizes the tale and concerns the notorious British assassin, the Jackal, and the determined intelligence agent who is dispatched to catch him. Maintaining all the hallmarks of the spy thriller genre that make Forsyth's works so compelling, the newest take on The Day of the Jackal adds just the right amount of modern touches to keep things fresh and new.

A British and American co-production, season 1 of The Day of the Jackal airs nearly simultaneously on both sides of the pond, and has earned high marks from critics. With Eddie Redmayne leading the cast as the eponymous killer, the story unwinds in typical thrilling fashion, but the show has added new wrinkles to keep things moving. With the debut season proving to be a hit, it was clear from the start that The Day of the Jackal wasn't meant to be a miniseries. With all that said, Peacock and Sky preemptively renewed the series for a second season.

With the sophomore outing ordered, the latest news comes in the form of a story tease for The Day of the Jackal season 2. The update comes directly from executive producers Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant, who dropped hints regarding what The Jackal will be up to in the forthcoming season. They "know what his priority is, in of what his next mission will be," and it has something to do with finding his family. Since The Jackal is himself such a mysterious figure, that will likely make up the bulk of the season.

Read Neame and Marchant's comments here:

Neame: There’s some serious bit of unfinished business.

Marchant: We actually know what his priority is, in of what his next mission will be. He’s trying to find [his family]. Whether he does or not, let’s see.

Unlike the show itself which is filled with suspense, there was little tension when it came to whether The Day of the Jackal would be renewed for season 2. Sky and Peacock took the guess out of the equation when it was announced in November 2024 that the show had been renewed. The reveal came with several weeks to go in the debut season's run, and this suggests that season 2 may have always been planned. Though few details about season 2 are known yet, it's assumed that the cast and creative team will return to reprise their roles.

The Day of the Jackal premiered on November 7, 2024, in the UK, and on November 14, 2024, in the US.

Will The Jackal Have His Day Again?

Predicting the cast of The Day of the Jackal season 2 is difficult at this juncture because it's unclear what direction season 2 will take. Though the season is confirmed, it's unknown if it will be a direct continuation of season 1's storyline, or if it will change things. As such, it's only safe to assume that the main players will make it to the sophomore outing, at least until more information is available. Eddie Redmayne is confirmed to return as the titular Jackal, while Lashana Lynch is practically guaranteed as the tenacious MI6 agent, Bianca Pullman.

Chukwudi Iwuji's Osita Halcrow is Bianca's direct superior at MI6, and he'll also probably be back. Meanwhile, other higher ups within the government organization like Lia Williams as MI6 Deputy Chief Isabel Kirby and Jonjo O'Neill's MI6 fixer, Edward Carver, should also return. Shadier characters like Charles Dance's Timothy Winthrop might not return to employ the Jackal in season 2, but it all depends on how the story plays out.

Predicting the story of The Day of the Jackal season 2 isn't easy, since it's expected that the first season will wrap up the classic, but modernized, storyline from Forsyth's novel. With that in mind, the sophomore outing will probably dream up some new story for the deadly assassin, and continue MI6's hunt for the Jackal. That would be the most logical approach to season 2 and would allow for Bianca's storyline to grow as she becomes more and more desperate to bring him down.

On the other hand, The Day of the Jackal season 2 could be a prequel that explores the origins of the titular character, and shows earlier missions that made him such a fearsome killer. Whatever happens, it will remain a mystery until the entirety of the fast-paced thriller's first season has been released.
