Like its predecessors, The Expendables 4 cast looks as ambitious as ever as it sees several new stars the high-profile ensemble. With Sylvester Stallone’s Barney Ross and his band of mercenaries assembling for yet another high-octane mission, The Expendables 4 deals with a conspiracy that involves the titular team into a possible nuclear conflict between Russia and America. Scott Waugh (Act of Valor, Need For Speed) serves as director while leading star Jason Statham doubles as one of the film’s producers. Unlike The Expendables 3, the fourth installment also retains the franchise’s typical R rating.
The Expendables 4 brings back some of the series’ most notable faces such as Stallone and Statham while introducing many new faces, like Megan Fox and 50 Cent. Although classic franchise characters like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Trench will not be returning, the newest installment will put the spotlight on sportspersons and martial artists.
Sylvester Stallone As Barney Ross
Sylvester Stallone directed and co-wrote the very first Expendables movie back in 2010, debuting his character Barney Ross. However, Stallone is finally leaving the Expendables franchise, with his stint on The Expendables 4 cast marking his final appearances as Barney. The aging mercenary serves as the leader of the titular team and has the final say behind most of its global operations. A skilled hand-to-hand combatant and firearms expert, Barney is capable of unleashing barbaric violence, but he also functions according to a moral code of conduct. But this time round, Barney is finally ready to the leader’s reins to his second-in-command Lee Christmas.
Stallone has been a defining action star of the '80s with roles like Vietnam War veteran John Rambo in the Rambo franchise. He's taken many iconic tough guy roles, such as the titular cop in Cobra and the time-traveling LAPD Sergeant John Spartan in Demolition Man. Stallone has also showcased his emotional capabilities as the lovable heavyweight boxer Rocky Balboa in the Rocky franchise and its spin-off Creed. The character introduced in 1976’s Rocky was the action star’s breakout role with him garnering nominations for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay. He earned another Best ing Actor nomination for reprising his role in Creed.
Jason Statham As Lee Christmas
Jason Statham’s Lee Christmas is a loyal member of the team who mostly specializes in fighting with knives. He’s a calm and mature risk-taker who is the best leader figure the team can have after Barney. It is for this reason that Barney is ready to the baton to Lee this time. The Expendables 4 cast member Statham has himself been involved in many franchises over his action-heavy career.
In The Transporter trilogy, Statham played Frank Martin, a man of few words who is tasked with transporting high-profile targets. His fame increased further with his involvement in the Fast & Furious franchise, where he played the wise-cracking antihero Deckard Shaw. Statham has also been a regular collaborator of director Guy Richie, starring in many of his action thrillers such as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (where he played Bacon) and the streetsmart slot machine shop owner, Turkish, in Snatch. He has also dabbled in creature features, playing the rescue diver Jonas in The Meg series.
Dolph Lundgren As Gunner Jensen
The original Expendables team is much smaller in the fourth movie even though it retains some of the recurring stars like Dolph Lundgren (who returns to play Gunner Jensen). Gunner is an integral part of the team with his expertise in heavy arms but he can be a little unpredictable due to years of combat stress (which leads him to do some philosophical soul-searching in The Expendables 4). Gunner actor Dolph Lundgren is best known as the colossal Russian boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, a role he reprised in Creed II. He’s also popular for playing the homicidal superhuman soldier Sgt. Andrew Scott in the Universal Soldier movies.
Randy Couture As Toll Road
While several actors have left the Expendables franchise over the years, Randy Couture remains as one of the few original left in The Expendables 4 cast. He plays the team’s demolition expert Tool Road. Toll is usually full of glee but hates it when his peers mock his “cauliflower ears”, a result of years of college wrestling. In reality, Toll’s ears are a reminder of not just actor Randy Couture’s collegiate wrestling but also his stellar career as a former mixed martial artist. Couture transitioned to acting with roles like the notorious Akkadian king Sargon in The Scorpion King 2 and former soldier Briggs in The Hard Way.
Iko Uwais As Undisclosed Villain
Following in the footsteps of Eric Roberts, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Mel Gibson, Iko Uwais is the new villain in the Expendables franchise. Uwais’ antagonist is an ex-soldier who turns into an arms dealer and leads his own private militia. As is evident from the stills featuring him and co-star Jason Statham, it’s certain that the Indonesian stuntman and action star will have a lot of punching and kicking to do. Uwais first broke out with The Raid franchise in which he played Rama, a special forces rookie proficient in fighting with his fists and literally anything in sight. He also led Netflix’s Wu Assassins as chef-turned-supernatural fighter Kai Jin.
