Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Handmaid's Tale season 6, episode 3!

Janine's fate after the events of The Handmaid's Tale season 5 has just been revealed, and here's where she is and what is going to happen next. Janine is one of The Handmaid's Tale's most interesting characters, with her remaining a Handmaid stuck in Gilead even after June escaped the oppressive country. Janine's relationship with Aunt Lydia and her constant defiance of the Gileadean order makes her one of The Handmaid's Tale's strongest fighters. This fighting spirit seemingly sentenced her to death in season 5, but The Handmaid's Tale season 6 has revealed that she is alive.

spinoff called The Testaments is in the works, season 6 has the task of wrapping up the original show's major storylines. Thus, it isn't surprising that the fate of Janine has been revealed so early on, with her and Aunt Lydia's relationship being a major storyline in season 6.

Where Janine Is In The Handmaid's Tale Season 6

& How She Got There

After being defiant throughout the show, Janine was given one last shot in The Handmaid's Tale season 5, with her being posted as a Handmaid at Commander Lawrence's house. This is short-lived, as an argument with Naomi Putnam got her removed from the house and sent back to the Red Center. After she refused to apologize to Naomi at the request of Aunt Lydia, Commander Lawrence sent a group of Eyes to take her away. This is the last time that Janine was seen in season 5, with her presumably either being sent to the Colonies or killed on the Wall.

This brings us to The Handmaid's Tale season 6. After being informed that there is something she needs to see, Aunt Lydia heads to Jezebel's. Jezebel's is a brothel in Gilead, with various women being sent there. The sex club is often visited secretly by Commanders or other higher-ups in Gilead, with it being a frequently seen location throughout past seasons of The Handmaid's Tale. Upon her arrival, Aunt Lydia makes the shocking discovery that Janine is now working at Jezebel's, with her somehow making it there after being taken away by the Eyes.

Aunt Lydia is shocked to find that Janine and other former Handmaids who have had children have wound up at Jezebel's, as she was told that they would be rewarded. Although it isn't explained how Janine wound up there, it probably has to do with Commander Lawrence. Since Commander Lawrence has always had a soft spot for Janine, he may have sent her to Jezebel's. Since the brothel is so secretive, Lawrence could know that Janine wouldn't be found there, allowing Jezebel's to act as her safe space.

This could get Janine in even more trouble, explaining Janine's comments about how Lydia only ever makes things worse.
