Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Hunting Party season 1 finale.

Created by JJ Bailey, season 1 of NBC's The Hunting Party consists of ten episodes and is currently available to stream on Peacock. The series follows "a small team of investigators who are assembled to track down and capture the most dangerous killers the country has ever seen, all of whom have just escaped from a top-secret prison that’s not supposed to exist." Jake Coburn is the co-showrunner, executive producer, and writer alongside Bailey.

Episode 10, "Jenna Wells," serves as the season finale and sees the team track down a "notorious killer chemist." Hassani is shot during the case and taken to the hospital, leaving Bex, Shane, and Oliver unsure whether he'll survive. However, his near-death experience is a red-herring. Oliver collapses during The Hunting Party's final seconds from the same cyanide patch their killer used on her victims. Bex confesses that she lied — she does think about him and Sam — and holds her former partner as Shane runs for help.

ScreenRant interviews Melissa Roxburgh about her reaction to that emotional ending, Bex's feelings for Oliver, and a potential love triangle in The Hunting Party season 2.

Oliver's Future In The Hunting Party Is A Mystery On And Off-Screen

"I hope the audience has the same reaction because Nick Wechsler was such an integral part of the team and of our cast."

ScreenRant: Things aren't looking good for Oliver. Do you think he's going to make it?

Melissa Roxburgh: That one was a surprise. They didn't tell us until we got the script. And then I got a phone call from Jake and JJ, and they were like, "So this is what we're going to do," and I was like, "No, don't do that!" [Laughs]

So I hope the audience has the same reaction because Nick Wechsler was such an integral part of the team and of our cast. The mystery is lingering onscreen and offscreen, and I need him back. It was an interesting thing that happened in the final season, and it's such a cliffhanger. I'm ready for season 2 to see what happens.

Bex has a very emotional reaction. Was she coming to a realization during that moment?

Melissa Roxburgh: I think with Dr. Malak, she has the last moments visualizations of Oliver Odell, and she says that to him. Whether we think it's true or not, we're not sure, but I think this is the real moment, obviously, roles reversed, where we see how she actually feels about him. And as much as she's been keeping him at arms' length throughout the season, we realize how much she actually cares about this human and how important he was to her.

A Love Triangle May Form In The Hunting Party Season 2 (Pending Oliver's Survival)

"Going into season 2, if we get it, I think she'll be caught at a crossroads."

Are they romantic or platonic feelings at this point?

Melissa Roxburgh: I think it's more romantic than she let on. Sometimes you can love someone, and they're not right for you still. So whatever happens in season 2, we don't know, but I do think that there is something more than a platonic friendship between them. Absolutely.

She also shared a moment with Shane in the hospital. Do you see something brewing there?

Melissa Roxburgh: Yeah. What I loved about season 1 is that there was no romance. It was about what she does for a living and who she is and building this really strong independent woman, but real life involves relationships. And so, going into season 2, if we get it, I think she'll be caught at a crossroads.

Does she go for the safe, reliable soldier who is always there for her, always has her back, and she really does care about? Or does she go for someone that understands her past in a way that no one else does and has understood her in a way that no one else has? So, we'll see.

Bex And The Team May Be On Their Own In The Hunting Party Season 2

"I don't think she's going to shy away from the challenge."

The team has been dismissed. Bex came into this mostly in the dark. What has she gained from being on this team, and what is she potentially losing here?

Melissa Roxburgh: I don't think she knew what she was g up for when she ed the team. I think she thought that she was just going to go catch some bad guys and bring them home. And obviously, it's more than she signed up for, and I don't think she's going to shy away from the challenge.

But I think that her and the team specifically might be on their own a little bit more than they realize. We realize that the higher-ups that have been giving them the orders might not be giving them the orders for the right reasons, or we're not sure. It's all one big question mark, one big mystery.

Hassani's wife has been dead for two years. How does this change the way Bex has been picturing his life?

Melissa Roxburgh: I think we're going to see a lot more sympathy for him, and I don't think she's going to tell people right away. Obviously, he kept it from the team for a reason. Whether it's to avoid that pity, I'm not sure.

But now that she knows, I think that she understands him a little bit better because he hasn't really revealed that much about himself, other than he has a daughter, which she kind of psychoanalyzed about him already. He never told her. She just kind of gathered it, given her job. So now that she's got this new information, I think that there's a lot more sensitivity towards him.

Which twist surprised you most during season 1?

Melissa Roxburgh: The barcode on the bottom of Lazarus' foot. I think that's fascinating because it just shows you really don't know what's going to come next.
