An exorcism movie starring Russell Crowe has climbed the streaming charts yet again. Crowe was born in New Zealand in 1964 and became a rising star off the back of prominent movies including 1992's Romper Stomper, 1997's L.A. Confidential, and 1999's The Insider before being launched as a superstar with his Oscar-winning performance in Ridley Scott's Best Picture-winning 2000 movie Gladiator. Crowe has been nominated for two other Oscars (for The Insider and A Beautiful Mind) in addition to winning one BAFTA and two Golden Globes.

Russell Crowe movies have occupied many different genres in the more than two decades since he won his Oscar. In addition to his comfort zone of dramas (The Water Diviner, Boy Erased), he has also appeared in comedies (The Nice Guys, A Good Year), Westerns (3:10 to Yuma, True History of the Kelly Gang), comic book movies (Thor: Love & Thunder, the Kraven the Hunter) and a musical (Les Misérables). Crowe has also dabbled in the horror and thriller genres multiple times with titles including Unhinged, The Mummy (2017), and The Exorcism.

The Pope's Exorcist Has Had A Streaming Resurgence

It Previously Charted In 2023

Russell Crowe's The Pope's Exorcist has risen again on the streaming charts. The 2023 movie, which is based on a pair of books by Father Gabriele Amorth, the personal exorcist for the Pope, stars Crowe as Amorth and follows him as he tackles a particularly intense case of possession. The movie has previously become a streaming success when it debuted on Netflix in August 2023, climbing to No. 3 on the streamer's chart of English-language movies. Although it has a 51% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences gave it a much stronger 80% score on the Popcornmeter.

The Pope's Exorcist is inspired by 1990's An Exorcist Tells His Story and 1992's An Exorcist: More Stories.

Per FlixPatrol, The Pope's Exorcist is resurging on streaming. The horror movie has hit the Top 10 on various streaming platforms in a variety of territories. At the time of writing, it has been on the Netflix Top 10 in two territories over the past week (with the highest position being No. 2 in Portugal). This week it has also charted on Prime Video in two territories (peaking at No. 7 in Finland and Norway) and on Prime Video in 21 territories (peaking at No. 2 in Paraguay, Haiti, and Belize).

Our Take On The Pope's Exorcist Charting

The Movie Has Solid Longevity

While horror movies tend to chart during the Halloween season, it has been weeks since the holiday and not every territory celebrates Halloween. This means that it is more likely that the Russell Crowe movie is being streamed in anticipation for the Ridley Scott sequel Gladiator II, even though Crowe is not set to appear. Regardless, this spells good news for the The Pope's Exorcist 2, which was greenlit in May, as the original movie has continued to engage audiences across the world after its successful theatrical run where it earned $77 million against its $18 million budget.
