There's a lot to love about Martin's worldbuilding, attention to detail, and page-after-page describing great feasts, but really ramping it up with a "big smash" can help make it feel like a bigger reward after waiting so long.
"I have to finish the books. That's the one thing I'm completely in control of. There's no budget limitations. There's no other executives on the studio side that I have to please, or other writers with different views. The books are what I'm going to make them. And, I think the one I'm writing is coming pretty well, but I wish it would come faster." - Martin in an interview with Collider in March 2025.
Importantly, this is also likely to be the longest book in A Song of Ice and Fire, given the amount it has to cover. The Winds of Winter can't afford to waste any time, because so much has to happen, and so diving straight into these battles, which have already been so well set up, can really help it avoid that, and makes it an even more exciting prospect, if that's possible at this point.
