There has been a lot of backlash over black actress Nico Parker being cast as Astrid, a white character, in the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon. I think it's really important for films or TV shows to stay true to their source material when it comes to casting, especially in regard to a character's race. However, I think this is relevant when a character's race is important to the narrative or their backstory. Astrid being white wasn't integral to her story, so I can't see why a performer of any background couldn't portray her.
