Warning: contains spoilers for recent issues of Thundercats as well as Thundercats: Apex!
Thundercats continues its amazing comeback by rolling out a new character that will rock the franchise. Dynamite Comics’ new Thundercats monthly has been a hit with critics and fans, united in their love of how effortlessly Declan Shalvey, Drew Moss and their collaborators have expanded Thunderan lore while honoring the original’s spirit. Now, in Thundercats: Lost #2, a new and deadly character makes his debut.
Other titles in Dynamite's deal with Warner Brothers/Discovery include Space Ghost, Powerpuff Girls and Jonny Quest.
Dynamite Comics provided Comicon.com with a first look at Thundercats: Lost #2. The book, written by Ed Brisson and drawn by Rapha Lobosco, sees the introduction of an entirely new character, named Scorpius. While Dynamite did not reveal any specifics about Scorpius, Thundercats Lost writer Brisson had this to say about the new villain:
A one-man army and hunter who knows the danger that cats present for his world and will stop at nothing to ensure that each and every cat is dead and buried. This murder machine is a threat unlike anything that the ThunderCats have faced before.
Dynamite did provide Comicon with an advanced look at the cover to Thundercats: Lost #2, showcasing Scorpius in all his deadly glory.
Dynamite's Thundercats Revival Got Off to a Roaring Start
Writer Declan Shalvey and artist Drew Moss Have Done a Pitch Perfect Expansion of the Thundercats Mythos
Dynamite kicked off 2024 with a revived Thundercats title, as part of a larger deal with rights-holders Warner Brothers/Discovery. The venerable franchise has been subjected to a handful of reboots since it debuted in 1985, with varying degrees of success. Dynamite’s Thundercats is the most ambitious reimagining of the concept to date, and Declan Shalvey and Drew Moss have accomplished this by balancing nostalgia with the need for growth. Shalvey, Moss and company have added cool new elements to Thundercats lore, such as a previously unknown link between Jaga and Mumm-Ra.

Not content to stop there, Dynamite has also rolled out new characters as well. Early in Shalvey and Moss’ Thundercats run, readers meet Calica, a mysterious Thundercat who betrayed the team and broke Lion-O’s heart. Apex, recently revealed to be a twisted and futuristic version of Lion-O, is another innovation the creators have introduced to the mythos. Dynamite has also published other Thundercats books, such as a miniseries spotlighting Cheetara, as well as Thundercats Lost, which follows the adventures of some of the franchise’s lesser known ‘cats. Each one of these was a masterclass in how to handle a reboot.
Thundercats was one of the most popular entertainment properties introduced in the 1980s, at a time when similar toy lines were plentiful. Thundercats improved on the formula cartoons such as He-Man and the Masters of the Universe came up with, and earned its place in the hearts and minds of a generation. While other revival attempts have met with mixed results, Dynamite’s reboot is connecting not only with those who grew up watching one of the Thundercats cartoons, but also a new wave of fans. It is a good time to be a Thundercats fan.
Scorpius' Arrival Is Bad News for the Thundercats-But Good For Fans
Scorpius Needs His Own Action Figure
Scorpius is a new character, but he also looks like he would have been right at home in the original Thundercats cartoon and toy line.
And the introduction of characters such as Scorpius perfectly demonstrates why Dynamite’s Thundercats revival is the best yet. Scorpius is a new character, but he also looks like he would have been right at home in the original Thundercats cartoon and toy line. This potent mixture of the old and the new is exactly what the Thundercats franchise needed, and fans have responded, making its first issue a massive hit. Scorpius might very well be a harbinger for a new golden age for the Thundercats.
