Welling's Clark Kent only put on the Superman suit physically for the last shot of the Smallville series finale. While the episode itself had quite a few sequences with Superman in action as the hero sent Apokolips back into space, CGI was used to show Welling as the Man of Steel. Smallville stars Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum are trying to bring back the series. However, the duo is working on an animated Smallville sequel series, not a live-action return to the show. Given how James Gunn's DC Universe is only just starting and how David Corenswet's Superman is set to be key to the franchise, it is hard to picture DC allowing another ongoing live-action Superman adaptation. That is partly the reason why Tyler Hoechlin's Superman & Lois was canceled a few seasons short of the show's intended plan.

A Live-Action Smallville Sequel Series Seems Unlikely
While Tom Welling has been more open to playing Superman in live-action in recent years, I don't think there is a chance for a live-action Smallville sequel series to happen. That said, I believe in the potential of the animated sequel that is in the works, as most of the original Smallville cast would return, and the show's co-creators would write it. Smallville is one of the best superhero series of all time, so recapturing that magic with the freedom animation offers could lead to perhaps a more exciting Smallville sequel than if it were in live-action.
