Tomb Raider Movie Reboot Sequel Gets a Director & 2021 Release Date

A familiar face from Game of Thrones is officially in talks to play Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider, for the time being, was officially picked up in May of this year. Several names have been mentioned as candidates for the lead role.

Deadline confirms that Sophie Turner is in negotiations to star as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider. Turner is well-known for her portrayal of Sansa Stark on HBO's Game of Thrones and Jean Grey/Phoenix in two X-Men films. Other names floated for the role reportedly included Mackenzie Davis (Halt and Catch Fire), Emma Mackey (Sex Education), Emma Corrin (The Crown), and Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody).

The Standout Performer Gets Another Big Role

Little is known about the TV adaptation of Lara Croft. Amazon MGM Studios hyped the series for Amazon's Prime Video, calling it “epic” and “globe-trotting.” It is also said to be a ion project for Waller-Bridge who is under a deal to develop originals for Amazon. But outside of that, no specific details have been mentioned. But given the likely scale of the project, and the seminal Lara Croft games, it's potentially another standout character for Turner.

The Emmy-nominated performer currently stars in Joan, a crime drama for The CW, and stole scenes in the comedic thriller Do Revenge. She's arguably shown more versatility and a light touch to her portrayals since the HBO megahit came to a close, stepping away from Sansa. Tomb Raider could continue that, depending on how it goes.

The main draw of a Tomb Raider show from Waller-Bridge is the promise that the adaptation won't just be a TV version of what Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander did. If the Prime Video series has anywhere close to the singular touch of Fleabag, then Turner might have a tremendous part to play.
