When Toy Story first came out, children around the world rejoiced at the idea of their favorite toys coming to life when they were looking. These toys stole the heart of little ones around the world and many of the toys in the movie become household items. While some of the toys in Woody the cowboy.
When90s toys appeared in the background, adding additional nostalgia to the movie. This lead fans to think about what other real world toys they would have loved to see in the films, and while ones they're glad weren't included. Here are 5 toys we wish were a part of the movies and 5 we're glad were not.
Wanted: Furby
Love them or hate them, Furbies are extremely memorable. This toys have withstood the test of time and have even become an internet phenomenon. Depending on who is speaking, Furbies are either sweet and cute, or creepy and dynamic. With their large eyes and high pitched voice which speaks in their own language, Furbies are nothing short of memorable.
A Furby could have added some nice drama to the story, providing a character that would keep fans guessing about their true allegiances. In the end, this Furby character could be accepted, annoying quirks and all (like Forky) or could be hiding a sinister intention behind that sweet voice (like Gabby Gabby).
Didn't Want: Bratz Dolls
Bratz Dolls are like barbies with an attitude. While these popular toys have distinct personalities to draw from, they certainly would have added some tension to the films. With Barbie already playing such a large roll in the films, it feels wrong to bring in a toy that is essentially a Barbie knock-off. It's clear that these characters would not get along, and we don't want to subject Barbie to that!
Wanted: Tamagotchi
Tamagotchis were everybody's favorite digital pet. These small digital creatures went from being super beloved to a thing of the past. These little creatures let the know how their were feeling through their actions. A tamagotchi could have become a fan favorite through their expressions. All of the toys in Toy Story speak so it would have been cool to have a character with a face that had to act out their emotions to be understood.
Didn't Want: Tickle Me Elmo
Elmo is a popular television character, but that doesn't mean he has a place in Toy Story. This character has a high-pitched voice and an annoying laugh. Elmo's high energy would not vibe well with the other toys in the house.
It also would be strange to see how a toy Elmo would work in the Toy Story universe as Elmo is already an animated character while the other toys in the film aren't. For these reasons, we're glad he wasn't included.
Wanted: Lite-Brite
Lite-Brites are cool to look at. The captivating bright florescent lights and the ability to create any image they want opens up a world of possibilities. This toy could have been a romantic interest for the Etch A Sketch as they share some similarities. This toy also could go through a variety of challenges such as loosing batteries or having a light burn out - leading to interesting storylines.
Didn't Want: Easy Bake Oven
Easy-Bake oven was the go-to-gift for many children. This small appliance allowed kids to cook independently in a safe and fun enviornment. While this toy gives many fond memories, it doesn't fit in well with the other types of toys in Toy Story.
Almost all of the characters in Toy Story has faces, allowing them to talk without significantly changing the design of the product. Toys that do not have faces, like the Etch A Sketch communicate through movements and pictures. It's hard to image how an Easy-Bake oven would be able to communicate with others and personifying a glorified microwave just seems strange.
Wanted: Doodle Bear
Doodle Bear was this amazing bear that came with a special marker. Children took turns drawing images and writing words all over their bears before throwing them in the wash to gain a new slate. This toy is soft, cuddly, and expressive. This bear could have so much potential, helping the toys to sketch out plans or changing personalities with new designs. The original films were lacking in stuffed animals but Doodle Bear would have fit in well with new charters such as Ducky and Bunny.
Didn't Want: Bop It
Bop It is a face paced toy that spits out a series of directions for players to follow. As the game goes on, the directions get faster, making it more complicated and difficult to move further in the game. There are several reasons why this toy wouldn't work well in Toy Story.
Just like some of the other toys we don't want to see in Toy Story, this toy has no face, making it hard to animate and empathize with. Additionally, the well-known voice attached to Bop It may be hard to replicate, leaving fans distracted. Finally, a Bop It would probably not be good at communicating with the others, and these toys don't need any more problems due to poor communication!
Wanted: Poo-Chi
Toy Story does a great job at including toys that encourage children to engage in pretend play and act out in-depth scenarios. For this reason, there isn't a lot of technology in Toy Story. Unfortunately, this now seems a bit unrealistic considering the current environment.
A perfect way to incorporate a technological toy while still keeping the same nostalgic feel attached with toy story is to include a robot dog - specifically Poo-Chi, a dog released in the early 2000s. This dog could have some funny scenes with Slinky Dog while adding another popular toy to the mix.
Didn't Want: Homies
Homies were small collectible toys purchased primarily through vending machines. These toys were meant to represent various Chicano Mexican American Characters. While Toy Story would benefit from some diversity, there are not the toys to do it. The characters reflect certain prejudices about this community and animating these characters would only make it worse.
