Most on your watch face or alongside an app you were using. Always On is fantastic for seeing the time at a quick glance, but it also comes at the expense of increased battery usage. If you'd like to turn it off and get the longest battery possible, here's what to do.

There are a couple of ways to turn off the Always On display on your Apple Watch — the easiest of which is on your iPhone. Open the Watch app on your iPhone, tap 'Display & Brightness,' tap 'Always On,' and tap the toggle next to 'Always On.' Once the toggle changes from green to gray, you'll know the Always On display is turned off. Alternatively, the Always On feature can be turned off directly from the Apple Watch. From your Apple Watch, open the Settings app, scroll down the page, tap 'Display & Brightness,' select 'Always On,' and tap the toggle to disable it. The steps are identical no matter which route you go. You just get to choose which method is easiest for you.

While the Apple Watch's Always On display does keep the screen on, it doesn't do this at full brightness. Instead, it dims the display when the wrist is down so that key information is still visible on the screen without draining too much battery. s can dim the screen either by putting their wrist down, or by covering the screen with their hand. Raising the wrist or tapping the screen brings the Apple Watch back to full brightness.

Apple also lets you choose what's displayed when Always On is enabled. To do this, open Settings on the Apple Watch, tap 'Display & Brightness' and tap 'Always On.' Now choose what to show when the wrist is down. This includes Complication Data, Notifications, and Apps. By default, all three are active with Always On. You can also choose which complications show data, and which notifications and apps are visible with Always On. To remove an app from the list, just disable the toggle next to it.

Complications on the Apple Watch refresh once per minute when the wrist is down. They include apps like the Com, Calendar, Weather, Timer, Stopwatch, and third-party apps. If you choose to display apps when the wrist is down, the Apple Watch screen will dim to black when the open app is not in use, and only display the time on the screen.

It's important to note that only select Apple Watch models the Always On display feature. If you have an Apple Watch Series 5, Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, or Apple Watch Ultra you can turn the Always On display on/off as you see fit. If you have an Apple Watch Series 4 or older (or an Apple Watch SE model), there's no Always On to begin with.

In the end, turning off Always On will only be for those desperately needing the extra battery or are away from an outlet for prolonged periods. With Always On display enabled, the Apple Watch already gets 18 hours of battery life, which is just enough to get through the day. With the combination of disabling Always On and turning on Low Power Mode when required, Apple Watch s can easily get more than a weekend's worth of battery life if they need it.
