In a recent profile by Twister 2 story and the involvement of original characters. The star says the sequel, which just wrapped filming, is a "completely original" and "standalone story." In turn, there are no characters from the original movie involved in the sequel, Powell says. Read his full comments below:

We just wrapped it a couple nights ago. It’s definitely not a reboot. We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one. It’s a completely original story. There are no characters from the original movie back, so it’s not really a continuation. It’s just its own standalone story in the modern-day. I don’t think anyone has brought up this movie in forever, but talking to people, they’re like, "That was one of my favorite movies growing up. That movie terrified me."

Though Twisters is a standalone sequel that won't feature the return of any original characters, there is still a chance the characters could be related, as is often the case with legacy sequels. It has been rumored, though not officially confirmed, that the Twisters story follows the daughter of Jo and Bill Harding, the storm-chasing couple played by Hunt and Paxton. In the original movie, Jo and Bill are estranged and on the brink of divorce, but after surviving a massive mile-wide F5 tornado together, the couple reconciles during the Twister ending.

The Twisters cast includes stars like Edgar-Jones and Kiernan Shipka, and with the story set during the modern-day, 27 years after the original movie, both aforementioned actors are of the correct age to play Jo and Bill's daughter, who also becomes a storm chaser. Such a story would allow Twisters to stand completely on its own, while also paying homage to the original classic. Still, much remains unknown about the story, which should begin to change as the Twisters release date nears.

Twisters is scheduled to be released on July 19, 2024.
