Twisters box office debuted with a strong opening weekend of $81 million and the movie quickly rose to become one of the Top 10 highest-grossing movies of the year so far.
Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Twisters was projected to take in an additional $15.4 million at the domestic box office by the end of its fourth weekend in theaters. When its projected international grosses for the weekend were added to that haul, this brought its overall projected cumulative worldwide total to $310 million. This easily pushes the movie past the $300 million milestone, making it the ninth 2024 release to that particular financial benchmark so far, behind Deadpool & Wolverine.
Twisters Still Hasn't Outgrossed The Original 1996 Movie
Twister Was An Incomprehensibly Huge Hit
While the Twisters release is a success by almost any measure, it still has not been able to match the success of the original smash hit Twister. However, this is a tall order, as the original movie - which starred Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton - was a massive blockbuster that became the second highest-grossing movie of 1996 behind the iconic Roland Emmerich disaster movie Independence Day. By the end of its theatrical run, it had grossed $495.7 million worldwide, a total that is still nearly $200 million out of its sequel’s reach.
It remains to be seen if the new movie can climb that high. It may still build steam because the Twisters cast includes Glen Powell, who recently played roles in the box office powerhouses Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You. However, given the fact that it’s already in its fourth weekend and now has competition from the record-breaking Deadpool & Wolverine, the sequel doesn’t seem likely to close that gap. This is especially the case when the 1996 movie’s total is adjusted for inflation, as it would have grossed $994.49 million if that total was earned in modern currency.
Top Gun: Maverick was the second highest-grossing movie of 2022, while Anyone But You is the highest-grossing romantic comedy of the decade so far.
However, the fact that Twisters likely will not outgross its predecessor does not mean that it is a failure. The movie cost roughly $90 million, so by ing this milestone, it has already more than tripled its production budget. This means the movie is more or less guaranteed to be in the black, as the average movie has turned a profit by the time it has earned back two-and-a-half times its budget.
