Twisters' Rotten Tomatoes Score Debuts Higher Than 1996 Original (By More Than You'd Think)

Summary

  • The first reactions to Twisters are glowing, with critics and audiences praising the film for being a wildly entertaining summer blockbusters.
  • Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell are singled out in many reactions for delivering great performances and having strong chemistry.
  • Twisters could end up being a big box office hit if it strikes a chord with audiences.

Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones lead the Twisters cast, with a story that follows a retired tornado-chaser who partners with a new team wielding exciting technology that could allow for the disruption of devastating storms.

Just ahead of the Twisters wide release, social media reactions to the film are now pouring in online. So far, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Check out select reactions on X, formerly Twitter, below:

"Twisters is a beautifully shot, heartfelt story woven into the tapestry of a good old fashioned Summer blockbuster," writes Jon Brown. He calls the film a "compelling drama and a rip roaring adventure" before praising the lead performances from Edgar-Jones and Powell.

Scott J. Davis calls Twisters "thrilling and exciting in all the best ways," while also praising Edgar-Jones and Powell as the movie's anchors.

Andrew Bullock writes that the movie is "a modern blockbuster executed without trotting out the cliché devices overused in Hollywood today."

"The story leaves something to be desired, but Twisters absolutely delivers where it matters with huge-scale thrilling set pieces. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell are an engaging lead duo, but it's Brandon Perea who steals every scene he's in," writes Ian Sandwell.

Manuel São Bento writes that Twisters "is exactly what one expects from a disaster flick," featuring "[a]drenaline-fueld action, a predictable yet effective story & compelling protagonists elevated by Daisy Edgar-Jones & Glen Powell."

"If you want a great summer blockbuster this year," writes Emily Murray, "[Twisters] more than has you covered."

Brian Davids praises Twisters for being "the rare legacy sequel that doesn't shoehorn all the tropes that tend to come with franchise reboots." He singles Edgar-Jones as a particular highlight.

"Enjoyed it," writes Lou Thomas, "especially Glen Powell's fun turn as a cowboy scientist."

Twisters Has The Makings Of A Summer Hit

The Lee Isaac Chung Sequel Could Strike A Chord With Audiences

After titles like The Fall Guy and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga disappointed at the box office earlier this year, the summer movie season has gotten off to a strong start with animated titles like Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4. A Quiet Place: Day One has also been a hit. With the latest Twisters reactions being generally glowing, it certainly seems like the film could end up being a major success.

After Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone But You, and the critically-acclaimed Hit Man, Powell has cemented himself as a new leading man in Hollywood. Twisters is coming at the perfect time in Powell's career, and it is certain to significantly benefit from Powell's rising star power over the last two years. Edgar-Jones is relatively untested as a movie star and is mostly known for her moving performance in the British drama series, Normal People, but the reaction posts suggest she really elevates the Twister sequel.

Other actors appearing in Twisters include: Brandon Perea, Anthony Ramos, Kiernan Shipka, Sasha Lane, David Corenswet, and Maura Tierney.

While the Deadpool & Wolverine is poised to make a big splash in theaters at the end of July, Twisters should have one solid week to dominate screens with relatively little competition as A Quiet Place: Day One begins to taper off. If it proves to be a hit with audiences, it could well have legs into August, even against the MCU's latest offering. It remains to be seen how Twisters will fare in theaters, but the unanimously positive early reactions are a very promising sign.
