Contains Spoilers for West Coast Avengers (2024) #4!Ultron has ed the Avengers, and now he’s got the costume to prove it, thanks to a classic member of the team. Hopefully looking the part can help Ultron win over a distrustful public, but it’s going to be an uphill battle, especially since he’s not the only Ultron out there anymore.

In West Coast Avengers #4 – written by Gerry Duggan, with art by Danny Kim – the heroic new Ultron gets a new Avengers-inspired design courtesy of Iron Man.

Ultron debuts his new Avengers-inspired armor in West Coast Avengers (2024) #4

Ultron has spent the series thus far trying to convince the titular team that he really is a hero, and not just the supervillain they expect of him. Iron Man giving him a makeover is the ultimate symbol of Tony accepting Ultron. It’s also, as Ultron notes, a way to symbolize to the public that Ultron can be trusted, despite his checkered past.

Two versions of Ultron discuss their plans while on the moon in West Coast Avengers (2024) #3-1

One important thing to note is that this isn’t the only version of Ultron in the mainstream Marvel timeline right now. West Coast Avengers #3 revealed that the West Coast Avengers' Ultron reveals this to Iron Man, so it is not like it is a secret that could surprise the team.

The Avengers have an excellent track record when it comes to turning around the perception of former supervillains.

The bigger question is whether this redesign makes the difference to public perception that Ultron hopes it will. It’s got to be hard trying to be a hero when your very appearance reminds people of a world-threatening supervillain, and who knows much the addition of an Avengers logo will fix that problem. That said, the Avengers have an excellent track record when it comes to turning around the perception of former supervillains, from Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch to Hawkeye, so maybe the public will be more magnanimous than expected.

A Second Ultron Avenger Enters The Chat

Funnily enough, this isn’t the only heroic Ultron that’s ed the Avengers in the past year. In the short-lived series Avengers Inc. – written by Al Ewing with art by Leonard Kirk – it turned out that the amnesiac ‘Victor Shade’ was also a version of Ultron. Luckily, a future Hank Pym had hidden a seed of heroism within this Ultron as well, and at the series conclusion, ‘Victor’ debuted as the heroic Ultron ‘Mark Twelve’. While he hasn’t been seen since, it is wild that there are two distinct Ultrons in the Avengers running around the Marvel universe now.
