An exciting announcement from Marvel Comics has revealed its Uncanny Spider-Man limited series will feature the beloved X-Men hero Nightcrawler acting as New York City's newest Webslinger, acting as a solo hero for the first time in years.
Since the dawn of the Krakoan Age, Kurt Wagner has struggled with his place in the mutant nation, finally settling into his role as the leader of the Legionnaires - mutant peacekeepers policing their own. But it appears that after the calamitous events of the war with Orchis in Fall of X, Nightcrawler will be paving a heroic path alone, seen in a gorgeous cover from artist Tony Daniel.
his biological mother Mystique.
Escaping the turmoil of FALL OF X in a flash of smoke and brimstone, it’s time for Nightcrawler to play the swashbuckling, devil-may-care hero he was always destined to be! A potential new lover, battling some of the most iconic of Spidey’s rogues gallery, and saving civilians, mutant and human alike—Kurt is having the time of his life! But it’s not all fun and games… Nightcrawler will also be a lone soldier on the frontlines of mutantkind’s war with Orchis. Throughout the saga, he’ll also confront a long-simmering mystery surrounding his mother, Mystique, as Spurrier’s bold transformation of the character approaches a startling climax!
Spider-Man & Nightcrawler Have a Long History
After the shocking events of 2023's Hellfire Gala and the disastrous war with Orchis that will occur at the beginning of the X-Men's new Fall of X era, most of X-Men's new titles are taking place in areas outside Krakoa, and it appears that Kurt will be operating alone as the Uncanny Spider-Man. However, it's likely he'll have Peter Parker's blessing to take on his name. Peter Parker and Kurt Wagner had an intense first run-in in 1976' The Amazing Spider-Man #161, where the two heroes engaged in an issue-long battle after both thinking the other one was a murderer. The two quickly buried the hatchet, and Peter Parker has been a stalwart ally of mutantkind ever since, often allying with Nightcrawler's best friend Wolverine.
Series writer Si Spurrier hints that while this series is an exciting return to classic heroics for Nightcrawler, filled with intense fights, joyous victories, and a sense of freedom. This will especially be the case since Nightcrawler recently spent time as a literal monster, making a swashbuckling return to form a huge relief. Regardless, it will be really cool to see a "Spider-Man" hero use teleportation powers to travel across the cityscape, as opposed to web-swinging. The idea of Nightcrawler investigating his parentage has fans speculating, given that many disliked the earlier reveal that he was a descendant of the demonic Azazel.
Nightcrawler & Spider-Man's New Connection Is Just the Beginning
Interestingly, Kurt as the Uncanny Spider-Man is not the first time fans have seen a Nightcrawler/Spider-Man hybrid in 2023, with a Sinister-created chimera called "Wallcrawler" introduced in the Sins of Sinister limited series Nightcrawlers. While some fans thought that Wallcrawler would be traveling to the main Earth-616 timeline, it is even more exciting that the actual X-Men hero Nightcrawler will be stepping up as New York City's newest Spider-Man. However, it does suggest that Nightcrawler's time as Spidey will have long-lasting consequences for his heroic legacy.
The X-Men hero Nightcrawler may be hiding from his past in his new role as the Uncanny Spider-Man, but the heroic and powerful mutant will be entering into a bold new era, fighting crime, finding love, and uncovering secrets from his complex life.
