The Voltron: Defender of the Universe originally aired during the mid-1980s and spawned several follow-up series centering on five young pilots from a battalion called the Robot Lions whose vehicles combine to create a giant robot. In 2022, Amazon MGM won a bidding war and began developing a big-budget, live-action adaptation of Voltron with Red Notice's Rawson Marshall Thurber directing.

Now, the live-action adaptation appears to have found its lead actor. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Daniel Quinn-Toye has landed the lead role in the Voltron movie, which is set to film this fall in Australia. The newcomer has no film credits to his name, though he was the understudy to Tom Holland in the West End production of Romeo and Juliet.

What Daniel Quinn-Toye's Casting Means For The Voltron Movie

They Have Found Their Lead Actor

Though plot details remain under wraps for the Voltron movie, director Rawson Marshall Thurber co-wrote the script alongside Ellen Shanman. Then, Amazon, Thurber, and the producers carried out an extensive search for the male and female leads, conducting screen tests in early to mid-September. Daniel Quinn-Toye was one of four candidates selected for the shortlist for the male lead, though he now officially has the role. Meanwhile, the female role, which had three actresses auditioning, is still available.

Though Daniel Quinn-Toye currently has no film credits to his name, he has appeared briefly on television, including a role in the BBC Three series Badults and working as an extra in an episode of Outlander. However, it was his stage work that caught the attention of the Voltron filmmakers, including serving as the understudy to Tom Holland in the West End production of Romeo and Juliet, though he also made his professional debut in the same production, playing the role of Paris, a suitor to Juliet.

He's Due For A Breakthrough

Though the newcomer only has a few television and stage credits to his name, the Voltron filmmakers seem to have found their preferred actor for the job, though it's unknown who he will be playing. Daniel Quinn-Toye's casting is perhaps more consequential for the actor himself than the Voltron movie. Since he currently has no film credits to his name, it's clear that the Voltron movie, a big-budget live-action adaptation of a popular property, has the potential to elevate the young actor's profile among casting agents and producers.
