Negan's alliance with The Walking Dead season 10 has led to the recreation of a scene from season 6 of the AMC series, back when Alexandria's conflict with the Saviors was just heating up. In The Walking Dead season 10, episode 11, titled "Morning Star", the people of the Hilltop find themselves in dire straits when they discover that Alpha is leading the Whisperers in a full-scale assault on their community.

Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) tries to convince Alpha to force the Hilltop into surrendering, but Alpha goes ahead with their plan. At the end of the episode, the Whisperers arrive with their horde and the battle begins. Daryl (Norman Reedus), Rosita (Christian Serratos), Ezekiel (Khary Payton), and all the others form a line and try to hold off the zombies, but the Whisperers are relentless in their attack. The Hilltop is put on the defensive, and the advantage clearly belongs to Alpha and her people.

Sunday's episode of The Walking Dead calls back to an important moment from season 6. In the lead-up to the final battle, the survivors try to evacuate the children but one of the roads is blocked by a barricade of logs and a zombie is hanging from a tree. Daryl says that finding another road will be pointless, because it will be blocked too. This strategy is what makes Daryl realize that Negan has ed up with the Whisperers. Daryl recognizes Negan's tactics from the season 6 finale when Rick and his group tried to get a pregnant Maggie to a doctor but were constantly waylaid by roadblocks set up by the Saviors, one of which was made of logs. At one point, the Saviors tried to put the fear into them by dangling a dying man from a chain.

It was this plan that allowed the Saviors to capture Rick's people and murder both Glenn and Abraham, and now Negan is lending the same strategy to his newfound allies. So even if Negan really isn't the same person that he was in previous seasons, his tactics, at least, haven't changed at all. Also, Negan's decision to help Alpha will make it difficult for him to ever earn their trust, even if he does end up turning on Alpha in the end. Negan betraying Alpha won't change the fact that he helped the Whisperers launch an attack on the Hilltop.

Regardless of what Negan decides to do next, the Hilltop has been put in a precarious position, and it's unclear how they'll get out of it. Negan's strategy had disastrous results for Rick's group in the season 6 finale, but there's a good chance that things will go differently this time in The Walking Dead season 10. The Saviors tried to break the Alexandrians, but by choosing to force a fight, the Whisperers are already taking a much different approach, and it's possible that it will backfire.
