Warning: Spoilers for Werewolf by Night
The MCU just wasted another opportunity to expand the Eternals’ MCU connections in Werewolf By Night. Since their movie ended, the presence of the Eternals has been barely felt in Phase 4. Interestingly, a chance to help remedy that came and went in Marvel’s Halloween special.
Marvel had a chance at a perfect reference to them in Werewolf by Night’s opening sequence when the narrator was going over Ulysses Bloodstone’s backstory. Since Ulysses had lived for thousands of years in the MCU, it would make a lot of sense for Marvel to link to the Eternals in Werewolf by Night, particularly when considering how he’s connected to one of them in the comic books. In the Marvel Universe comic, it was established that Ulysses was once part of a monster-hunting team that included Doctor Druid, Zawadi, and Makkari, the super-fast member of the Eternals. Based on this story, it would have been fitting if one of Werewolf by Night’s drawings sneakily showed Lauren Ridloff’s Makkari fighting beside Ulysses as a monster hunter at some point in the planet’s ancient history.
What A Ulysses-Makkari Team-Up Would Mean For The MCU
Marvel hinting at a previous alliance between the MCU's Ulysses Bloodstone and Makkari would have been an interesting addition to the Marvel mythos. First of all, going down this road would have opened the door for Marvel to eventually tell a story where Laura Donnelly’s Elsa Bloodstone finds herself fighting alongside one of her father’s former friends. Not only would this have been a potentially exciting team-up for the MCU’s future, but just having this detail in the special would have gone a long way toward properly expanding the Eternals’ connections to the wider MCU.
Marvel Hasn’t Done Enough With The Eternals In The MCU
Surprisingly, references to Phase 4’s new superhero team have been kept to a minimum after Eternals. While Marvel has included Easter eggs that acknowledge Kingo’s acting career, that doesn’t even scratch the surface of their importance. Due to the nature of these characters, Marvel could actually go so much deeper with them if it tried. Given how long they’ve lived on Earth, it would make sense for them to be ingrained in so many different aspects of the Earth’s history. Teaming up Makkari with Ulysses Bloodstone was just one way that the comics made the most out of the Eternals’ longevity. Over the years, the comics also revealed that Sersi was in the court of King Arthur, Gilgamesh completed one of Hercules’ 12 Labors, and the Eternals had once fought Apocalypse.
The Eternals should be similarly important to the MCU’s history. That was indeed the impression provided by Eternals, but the MCU’s movies and shows have yet to that notion. It’s possible, of course, that Marvel could change its approach as the MCU moves forward. Through characters like the Asgardians, Moon Knight’s Egyptian gods, and now Werewolf by Night’s Bloodstone family, there’s no shortage of opportunities for intersection between the Eternals and the stories of other MCU heroes. And depending on how these references are handled, they can even set up some memorable Eternals cameos in future MCU projects.
