Warning: contains spoilers for Avengers: War Across Time #2!Sindri, the creator of Mjolnir has been an integral weapon of Thor’s since his first appearance, but in Avengers: War Across Time #2, he loses the hammer to its original creator, who was accidentally brought to Midgard (aka the human realm.) Sindri is not happy to be in the human world, and there is no telling what he will do with Thor’s hammer.
Avengers: War Across Time #2 is written by Paul Levitz, drawn by Alan Davis, colored by Rachelle Rosenberg and lettered by Cory Petit. The issue opens with the original Avengers breaking into The Fantastic Four’s headquarters, looking for Doctor Doom’s time platform. While tweaking the platform, the Avengers inadvertently summon Sindri, the King of the Dwarves, to Earth. Sindri is not happy with this, and embarks on a rampage across New York. Conventional metals, such as iron and steel, do not affect Sindri, which renders most weapons useless against him. Sindri makes short work of not only the NYPD officers who confront him, but Iron Man as well. Finally, Thor confronts Sindri, still unsure of how the Dwarf King came to Earth. Thor throws Mjolnir at Sindri, but he catches it, reminding the Odinson he was one who forged the weapon. Sindri has no problem wielding the hammer’s power, and the issue ends with Sindri ready to strike.
Mjolnir's Creator Is More Than 'Worthy'
Mjolnir, Thor’s enchanted hammer, is one of the most iconic weapons in comic book history. Its power is legendary, and very few things in the Marvel Universe can withstand it, even the Celestials. The hammer is enchanted so that only those who are worthy may lift it. Forged from the mystical element Uru by the Dwarves of Nidavellir, Mjolnir has had several wielders over the years, including Beta Ray Bill, Superman and even a frog, but the Odinson is the most memorable. Now, Mjolnir has returned to the hands of the one who forged it, and he is ready to use it to unleash havoc.
Sindri Is a Unique Threat to Thor
The fact that Sindri is able to hold the hammer and control its power suggest that Mjolnir’s enchantments believe him worthy, but in his hands it still has the potential to be a weapon of mass destruction. Thor has used Mjolnir for centuries, and he knows it well - but Sindri actually created the hammer, and there is a possibility he may know tricks that Thor does not. The dwarf that created Mjolnir is older than Thor, and has created many fantastic weapons for the Norse pantheon through the years, but he's also a ruler among his people who has had reason to distrust Asgard in the past. It makes sense Sindri would have created some fail safes when forging the weapon that give him ultimate control over it.
Thor and the Avengers’ saving grace will likely be that Sindri, at his core, is not a murderer or a despot, and is reacting simply out of fear and anger at having been pulled to Earth against his will. If Thor and his teammates can talk sense into Sendri, and get Mjolnir from his hands, then they have a chance to de-escalate the incident with no loss of life. However, it's a fascinating twist to learn that a forgotten Marvel character is totally able to snatch Mjolnir from Thor, wielding the weapon for his own ends - even against Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
